I'll come straight out with my question: can I use the dark angel codex with marines in my own colour scheme?
The reason I ask is I already have an (orange) marine army and try as I might I can't get a GOI Lib with sternguard to work. Despite playing numerous games either my luck fails or I play a cheesy player (TAU) or a RULESNAZI that just owns my army. Therefore I want to change it up. I have always like the mythoology of the Dark Angels, but never liked their colour scheme(s). Can I use DA models and a codex, and add them to my current vanilla marines? Can I still use my stormtalon? Are there any good tactics that I should go for? I love the DA flier and the massive landspeeder, which is the biggest draw, plus I like the story (I play for the fluff and the fun). Also cloaked marines look badass.

I play Fire Hawks (SM) and Necrons.

Absolutely. I have my marines painted like the Disciples of Caliban, but with Khorne Red instead of their green. I almost always play using the DA dex, but will occasionally use the SW, BA, or vanilla dex.

Just so long as you notify your opponent which codex you are playing out of, no problem at all

Yep, as long as you tell me it's the Dark Angels codex, and everything is clear and easy to tell what unit it's supposed to be, then I would have no problems playing it

They will need to have them as allies for your vanilla. You can't use the talon with DA either.
Anything else is fine.

I would take them as allies so you can use your talon and get many of the benefits of allies.

Spelling?
It's your army, do as you like. My question is, why couldn't use the Dark Angel codex as a successor?

They are your minis, do what you like. As long as your opponent knows you are using the DA codex, and the minis are identifiable as the appropriate troop/vehicle types, you are just fine.
Some out there will get cranky about it, but that will happen no matter what you do, so do what makes you happy with your army. Build a DA army and paint it hot pink it you want. Your minis...your choice.
Only issue is that Dark Angels have their own flyers and cannot use the stormtalon. Typical GW silliness.

As others have stated, no Stormtalon.
You can't mix and match DA and SM codex as the same army; one army must play the same codex set of rules. You can make them allies for each other, but make sure your opponent knows which units are from which codex, which could get tricky if they all have the same paint scheme.
But yeah, go for it! I'm all for creating your own backstory and embracing the fluff.

Here's to me in my drunken mood,
When I gamble, sin, and drink.
And when my days are over,
And from this world I pass,
I hope they bury me upside down,
So the world can kiss my ass!
