I was under the impression the SS was very selective in the troops it let in.

Yes and no. The SS was not as rigidly controlled as a lot of people think it was. There were numerous internal factions and Himmler didn't control them all and they were quite large (the Waffen SS under men like Sep Deitrich for example had a very different operating agenda than Himmler). In part it's because the German military didn't like the idea of the SS and got passed into law restrictions on the SS' ability to recruit men from the military able population. The SS was forced to go around that law and tip toe it to get recruits.

And of course the SS also forcibly conscripted non-German citizens because German conscription laws only restricted the SS from conscripting German citizens. Naturally the SS in practice favored Aryan looking people, but especially as the war reached its final years they slacked on a lot of those standard. There was the rigid SS standard where only pure 'Aryans' got to be members but there were others who had other ideas about fixing the SS' manpower problem before and throughout the war and they weren't all as stringent.

I suspect Mr. Burning is referencing the 36th Waffen SS Division aka the Dirlewanger Brigade. A brigade sized unit completely made up of convicts (most of them murderers and rapists). Even some of the Waffen SS' most brutal commanders found the 36th Division repugnant which is really saying something. They were a major part of the massacre in Warsaw and throughout Poland towards the end of the war.

Hell:

Dirlewanger even looks evil! Like he'd be the guy under the mask in a Scooby Doo episode.

Interesting fact - The last SS units to defend Berlin in the latter stages of the war were not made up of the German Volk.

It is a a "well established truth" that The SS were the elite of the elite.

I believe you are likely referring to the Stolen Valor act, which prevented you from claiming military honors to which you are not accorded. It was tossed by the Supremes for being an infringement into the first amendment, which I think was the right call. In any event, it did not apply to foreign honors or uniforms.

It has always been illegal to obtain money or services under false pretences, and this law about some military items would seem to be completely redundant. It is obviously some kind of bee in the republican bonnet, so I presume it is part of some sort of Obama reaching out to republicans deal.

I think you could argue that they're unfit parents; you'd just have to prove that they, as LordofHats put it, care about their ideology more than their children. Surely a competent individual would be aware of the potential damage they're doing to the kids by giving them those names? Not sure if there's legal precedent for this in the States, but I know the government has acted against parents giving their children potentially harmful names in New Zealand and Japan.

If that's why they're really going after them, though, I wish they'd up and say it rather than slamming them with trumped-up physical abuse charges. Sensationalism in the courts is never a good thing, no matter how just the cause...

I kind of feel like the latter sentiment is what went down - that they are essentially being harassed by DHS over the awful names. DHS has an awful lot of latitude, generally incredibly poor oversight, and they're never really going to face repercussions for going too far to "protect a child" - not after Lisa Steinberg, anyway. On the other hand, I suppose, someone who might think it a good idea to name their children after nazi figures... might also lack common sense and restraint in other arenas of child-rearing as well.

But of course, I can't see any of the evidence - and neither can anyone else, ever, that isn't a judge or a social worker in a closed hearing - so speculation in either direction is all we have.

Is an awful name abusive in and of itself? Not in the US it isn't, not yet.

Sort of. I was responding to the ludicrous comparison of Nazi Germany to the Republican party that was edited out by a mod (deservedly so).

My question about gas chambers was sarcasm. I think that the GOP and the Democrats are both parties full of bad things that need discussion and dealing with, but they are both far and away not even slightly like the Nazi party.

I post this because I get the feeling people are missing the edited post before mine, and foolishly assuming I think the GOP = nazis. That was Grundz, not me.

That was the point I was trying to make, I know several fascist fethheads who are not bad parents. I also know fascist fethheads who are bad parents, but the point I was attempting to construe was a parent's political leanings should not be reason enough in and of itself to take their kids away.

I don't think that's what people are saying...
I think what people are saying is he's a neo-Nazi who has named his children after some of the worst men in history. and therefore wrecking their chances of a 'normal' life.
There have been several similar cases made in numerous countries about parents naming their children stupid things.

Only Adolf Hitler and Joycelynn have names are that are widely recognisable as Neo Nazi related, and Joycelynn's name is only a middle name and likely won't even be included in most writings aside from legal documents. That said, they don't have to take the children away from the parents to rectify the situation, simply court order a legal name change.

Mentioning the Stolen Valor Act, the guy is wearing a General Assault Badge, so apparently he had participated in three assaults while part of an artillery or pioneer unit. In addition he's wearing an SS cuff title, so clearly he's a hardened combat veteran.

However he's gotten his uniform all wrong, he wears the shoulder rank of an SS Major, but the collar patches of a Heer NCO and the arm band of a civilian party member. The eagle on his left arm looks like a military surplus store job.
