So if anyone has noticed, Maugan Ra really doesn't fit anywhere in the new codex. For a ranged-superiority fighter, he's... mediocre. Heck, against MEQ he's better in CC than he is at range, since he has 5 S6 AP3 attacks on the charge. So I propose the following two ideas to make Maugan Ra worth taking:

A) R36" S6 AP5 Type: Heavy 5, Shred, Pinning, Rending
(Same melee profile)

OR

B) R36" S6 AP2 Type: Heavy 3, Pinning
(Same melee profile)

Which is better?

That's just upgrading his weapon. As a character he's pretty much fine, but the problem is not his stats it's this:
* He doesn't fit with Dark Reapers, because they want to shoot at slightly different targets and do not have Battle Focus
* He fit only somewhat with Guardians, but they've got such a short range.
* He'd be ideal with a unit like Swooping Hawks if he had Swooping Hawk Wings, but he doesn't.

The best unit for him is Harlequins as far as I can tell.

So to fix him you need to make him synnergise with Dark Reapers more without making him have a set of weird rule combinations and still use something that looks like a Shuriken Cannon. Good luck with that

How about making his weapon AP3 and keep rending?

Sure give Dark Reapers a rule they cannot use. Harlequins on the other hand with Battle Focus...i'd take him in a heartbeat.

Maugan Ra does not belong with any unit. He belongs on his own, pimpslapping Tyranid armies and pulling Craftworlds out of the warp.

Is it possible for him to be fixed?
Not according to gw.

A small and pretty much obsolete change except regarding looks would be to make his gun heavy. Well it looks heavy. He's relentless anyway, pretty sure it doesn't change anything.

What I would do is remove the close-combat part of the weapon completely (unless it interferes with the fluff) and make his weapon AP3. He wants to be with the Dark Reapers so let him :(

I forgot about that... well, I propose we change his statline to better reflect that fluff. He needs at least +3 to every stat and the weapon should be S8 AP2 Heavy 28, Shred, Distort.

Obviously not, but the original point still stands. Right now he fits in with nothing, especially (and weirdly) his own aspect. If his weapon was AP3, it would be a different story, but it's AP5. He's halfway between a good shooty PL and a good CC PL, and that makes him good at neither.

I've said it before, he's not meanto join another unit. GW wants non-competitive narrative based codexes! What could be more fluffy than having Maugan Ra off on his own tanking gak.

Exactly. With S6 AP5 He kills genestealers with a 2+ then a 2+...Only thing I want now is for it to be like Assault 6, then I'd be happy.
