Now, I am not saying I would actually do this. But I am a N00b and all. And it occurred to me that in a desperate enough situation, could I have my Mangler throw pMagnus into someone's back arc? He'd be knocked down, right? And immune to range attacks. Well, mostly if they are AOE.
Then he might actually be able to use Backstab?

Magnus would be knocked down, what would stop your opponent from moving their models into him and just pummelling him into a pulp?

Well, nothing. It was just hypothetical: as in, do the rules allow it?
I know it probably wouldn't work, and in fact, would be suicide. That is the rational, logical part of my mind.
The whimsical, theatrical part of me wonders, if a situation couldn't arise where it might be viable? The ultimate Hail Mary pass?
A great story to tell later?
"There was this one time, I was so pwned by this pKreoss list, I just had my Mangler throw Magnus into his back arc, praying for a miracle. Epic fail! But you should have seen the look on his face when I did it!"

there's nothing stopping you but:
1. magnus can't get up on his own turn if knocked down during your turn, the way around this is to have a spell or effect pick the model up, which I dont think mercs get
2. he needs to play WAAAAAY up front to use backstab which is pretty dangerous

If you have the ability to ignore knockdown, such a tactic might work. Not with your warcaster, but with something else maybe.

if you resist the knockdown, you still have to sacrifice move or action
if you don't resist the knockdown, you cannot stand up yourself that turn
the only time it works is if you have something like a spell (gators) to stand back up in which case you are thrown, cannot stand up (but dont have to sacrifice move or action) but then use a spell to get back up

Perfect Balance would allow you to stand up and act normally.
EDIT: I need to correct myself. Perfect Balance only works if you are able to forfeit your movement or action.

If you had 2 Freebooters. You could twohand throw Magnus into the other Freebooter that you ran behind your enemy.. You could potentially position yourself into their backarc and then beat'm up...
This situation happening in your favor is unlikely but doable.

A model that is Immune to Knockdown is still required to give up either their Movement or Activation if Thrown on the same turn. Pg. 55: "If a thrown model cannot be knocked down it must still forfeit its action or movement if it activates later in a turn in which it was thrown."

If you throw a model does it hit the first thing in it's path?
Would Magnus just fly into the model he is trying to get behind?

If Magnus couldn't be knocked down he could be thrown into melee range with his enemy, forfeit his movement, and then take his action.
Another possibility is any caster with the Flashing Blade spell and immunity to knockdown. You get thrown, forfeit action, walk into the enemy, and then cast Flashing Blade to kill the enemy. I've heard its a tactic with eMorghoul.

That's why you position the freebooter that you're landing on so that you don't have to move. And as for the other question, Magnus will stop with whatever he contacts first since he's a small base. So you aren't throwing over the enemy's head, your throwing off to the side of him, use that 1/2" melee. if you miss, you'll crash magnus into the target, both will be KD. If you hit the freebooter but you're outside of your small melee, you'll be stuck casting spells. (Which you're already focus down for that power attack launch) I wouldn't advise doing this, but it's doable, and I'd probably do it because it's badass.
