Me and my cousin are going tyranids and necrons but aren't sure if we should get the current codex now or wait for the next one. We don't mind waiting if its only gonna be a few months away but if its going to be over a year then we'll just get them now. Thanks in advance.

Tyranids, I am not sure, but the necrons are most definitely at least a year off.

Necrons will probably get either the last or one of the last 6e codices, given how rock solid the current book is.

Tyranids? Either within this year or early next year.

I'd assume Nids within the next 12 months. Necrons are way out, since they were designed with 6th in mind, hence the "heavy" vehicle classification on the Monolith. I wouldn't expect them in a long time.

I was thinking of starting a nid army, but decided it would be better to wait for the new dex, as it shouldn't be far away. Necrons would be worth collecting now.

Given that 6e still has a good three years to go, collecting Necrons is a very safe bet.

Doubtful given the "One codex every two months" strategy GW has adopted now, even if the mega-releases of 5e are now a thing of the past.

Considering Necrons were updated LATE 5th edition and Tyranids are Xenos, it is quite possible. Mostly, it was tongue-in-cheek, however.

Well, there is one remaining army that needs a mega-release a la 'Crons and Dark Eldar.

Heh. And the chances of that happening are slim and none.

The problem with the every two month model is they run out of codexes. I just don't think it will keep up. I think we'll see a supplement or a codex every two months, that seems more reasonable. Either way, Necrons will be WAAAAAY to the end of 6th or early 7th.

Tyranids at least are likely to get a dex in the next year or so.

Well if they give all the Marines their books it should be enough time to figure something out if the current system doesn't space things out enough.

Unless in addition to the sisters GW has some super secret special new army waiting to hit us all with...

...Nahhh...

Most likely, in fact, the release schedule will slow down over time - and the extra spots needed from speeding up to begin with can handily be filled with supplements. So you could easily be waiting a couple of years for Necrons, and I would expect even longer. Nids? Probably closer, but expect the older books like Orks and Black Templars to come first.

Tyranids - Early next year if the rumours are accurate
Necrons - Already have a proto-6th edition codex, I'd expect them to be the last Codex update for 6th edition 2-3 years from now.

I'd expect Necrons to be updated late in 6th ed/early 7th.

Tyranids are probably in the next year.

They are the only Xenos to get an update every edition.

Necrons are quite a long way off, but It's a very solid codex, so don't hesitate to start them.

Dude the Necron codex will take forever to get out.

They are coming! I feel them scratching inside my mind, scratching, screaming, running, so many...so, so many voices. They're coming for us - flesh, body and soul!

Just because GW is releasing 2 codexes every other month, doesn't mean, it's going to stay that way. So you are taking a big chance in waiting. How much is the Tyranid codex right now? $30, $40? I say get the Tyranid codex now, even if it comes out in January.

Why? So you can start making and painting your army now. I started collecting Tyranids in 4th edition, and I haven't really started since I was always "waiting" for that certain something.

Necrons been released what 2 years ago? While they were released for 5th edition, as was said, they were made for 6th edition. So they will be one of the last codexes to be updated for 6th, that is if they do update them.

Tyranids, the rumours are this year, but since they were released in 2010 January, I can't see them being released this year, that would be under 4 years, and I don't believe a codex has been updated under 4 years. So I say 2014, Q1 or Q2, they could be release a new codex for Nids.

The question is, does that $30, or $40 really matter that much for you? Can you have alot of games between now and the new release to make it worth while getting?

Get both. Start collecting and painting your army.

Just keep in mind some of the good units, like devorers may not be so good in next edition. In 4th edition, many many people had Spine fists, not many used devoreres. Look what happened. Nobody has now and many people use devoreres now.

The only real safe bet will be flesh borers, since that is the staple of a Nid army.

interpret this how you want, but there'll be a Necron codex before a SOB codex. Besides, do we even need another Necron Codex? They're already THE army to beat. Another codex will either make them stronger or nerf them and either way people will rightfully complain.
