If this guy was trying to stir the pot anymore and create more anger,he couldn't have done it much better.

I wonder why he doesn't comment on the fact that there is a far greater incidence of black youth killing other black youth over the color of their shirt, headband, or hat? Why doesn't he comment on cases like this one where a real child was killed by two black youth?

http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/22/us/georgia-baby-killed

Maybe the better thing for him to do is talk about the idiocy of people killing each other without bringing race into it or perhaps just sit down, shut up, and take another vacation.

He probably does not comment on those because people do not get up in arms about it.

Placating the rabble is far more important than addressing an issue which most people see as 'meh'.

Race has to be a factor, otherwise there's no story.

I am afraid you are right. The sad thing here is that placating the rabble means saying stupid things and getting them more pissed than they already are. I think he's been hanging around Biden too much.

Honestly he can't win with anything he says in relation to this instance.

He is not terribly wrong in that "when he was young" he could very well have been in a situation similar to that which happened to Martin in some parts of the South, but that was not the key factor in the Martin case.
By addressing the issue as a 'race' issue rather than 'perception of youth culture' it is a flawed approach.

To counter point that I could relate experiences from when I lived in New Orleans where I had to wrestle down a robber armed with a gun and hold him until police arrived or being on the street by the hotel I used to work in and having to fight two would be robbers armed with knives. In both cases all assailents were Black youth.
I could go that far and fail to mention the fact that I had quite a few Blacks that I would hang around with or the ones who have helped me in my life.
Obama takes us down the road where a Black can't catch a break in this country instead of talking about how he sees people of all races working to create a better life for each other.

I couldn't understand why the President saying, essentially, "this is why some people are frustrated, but this is the outcome based on the rule of law and the law was followed professionally and competently. No, we won't be filing federal charges as this is a state and local issue. We are making progress in race relations and things are actually getting better" would get all of you so riled up and act like he made some error. You'd have to not actually hear the speech to think that it is 'placating rabble' or 'getting them more pissed'.

Then I realized your link only gave a few sentences of a 17 minute speech where he addressed a lot of different issues, and left out everything that he said before and after that. Nothing he said was wrong, nor was he wrong to say it.

If you got that from what he said you have some serious bias issues you should address, though my guess is you didn't actually watch the speech and just let rage take you where you wanted to go.

It would be good if you actually watched the video before delivering your ignorant rant.
President Obama wrote:Somebody like Trayvon Martin was probably statistically more likely to be shot by a peer than he was by somebody else. So [black] folks understand the challenges that exist for African-American boys but they get frustrated, I think, if they feel there is no context for it and that context is being denied.

After seeing the DOJ's conduct in this case under the direction of Obama appointees up to and including a tip line established to try to nail Zimmerman after a not guilty verdict was returned, I'd say my attitude has good grounding.

Not to forget the fact that Obama weighed in on this case from the beginning comparing Martin to a son he might have had.

QFT.
President Obama wrote:And let me just leave you with a final thought, that as difficult and challenging as this whole episode has been for a lot of people, I don't want us to lose sight that things are getting better. Each successive generation seems to be making progress in changing attitudes when it comes to race. Doesn't mean we're in a post racial society, it doesn't mean that racism is eliminated. But you know, when I talk to Malia and Sasha, and I listen to their friends and I see them interact, they're better than we are. They're better than we were on these issues and that's true in every community that I've visited all across the country. So we have to be vigilant and we have to work on these issues -- and those of us in authority should be doing everything we can to encourage the better angels of our nature as opposed to using these episodes to heighten divisions. But we should also have confidence that kids these days, I think, have more sense than we did back then and certainly more than our parents did or our grandparents did and that along this long, difficult journey, we're becoming a more perfect union. Not a perfect union, but a more perfect union.

He's gotta say something to appease the "Justice for Trayvon!" idiots, and he knows better (now) than to say anything that could even remotely get the NRA's hackles up. A lot of blather about how he could've been Trayvon, and an extraordinarily non-committal, "Well, I think we should study SYG laws," seems about right.

Wait, so we now in the same thread have one person complaining that Obama said something "offensive" and another person complaining that everything Obama said was designed to not offend?

It's almost like everything he does will make someone, somewhere on Dakka irrationally angry.

This speech was not about outlining specific steps to confront the problem of racism in the United States, Seaward -- it was about acknowledging that there is a problem of racism in the United States. There are a lot of people in this country who are committed, for a wide variety of reasons, to shouting down any talk about this topic. In this speech, the President of the United States decided to talk about it anyway.

I mean, it would have been better if he had't involved himself in this story to begin with, but oh well.

I generally do not post here on politics and/or religion (because I'm one of those rare moderates) but what our President commented on just pissed me off.

This president of the United States has a polarized the population of the United States like no other since the Civil War. He could have kept his mouth shut and work and work on more important matters here in the US, like our economy. We are nowhere close to regaining the 2.8 million middle class jobs that were lost since the recession.

Instead he opens his mouth and make things worse.

"This president" has done no such thing by himself. The last 20 or so years of presidents, senators, and representatives, of all sides, have done this. Although, I would argue that most of it has been post 9/11 because politicians were able to use that as an excuse to ram every agenda they wanted down everybody's throats with "national security" as their rallying cry.

Yes, do not talk about racism, anything but racism! Look economy!

Yes, Obama has polarised the county like no other president (for a while at least.) He also has certain quality no other American president has had. People being upset about Obama talking about racism tells quite a bit about those people.

Quoted as something spoken by a person who, as usual, is either trolling or doesn't have a clue. I am not racist in any sense of the word, nor are any of the people I know who have been offended by Obama and his DOJ appointees conduct or comments throughout this case. We have a case of one idiot who had a gun that followed another idiot who wanted to be a gansta and had used drugs to the point his liver and brain were damaged making him subject to violent outbursts. The gansta wannabe idiot jumped the gun wielding idiot and took a bullet. Should be the end of the story, but I am willing to bet sometime in the near future, gangsta wannabe idiot's parents get invited to the Whitehouse.
