Personally speaking I prefer the Tyranids because I love the Xenos of 40K and their army is more interesting to look at and paint.

Space Marines are probably the better army to win games with and you also possibly have a bit more variety with Space Marines, especially once you start looking at Forge world.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

What, no Tau aka Protoss? Adun Toridas!

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

Can you make more negative unhelpful comments... oh yeah of course you can.

OP Seems by your previous postings you want to play either Chaos, Necrons, Space Marines or Blood Angels.

If you're new to 40k... Space Marines.

I second Space Marines...based on previous threads.

It will allow you to build a list as you collect models.

One good thing about tyranids is that they are supposed to get an update (new codex) either at the end of this year or very early next year. Not that this edition of tyranids is bad, but pretty soon, nids are probably going to get even better if you take into consideration how all the new xenos armies have been doing (daemons, tau and eldar are all very, very good armies now).

Is it too much to ask for both? I know a lot of Necron/GK/Tau/Eldar players find their new books fun and the books are all very good in terms of strength.

You can have both. I find all my armies fun. They happen to be pretty strong as well, though I also run some fun armies which aren't as competitive.

Probably the question that will be more appropriate is, what type of play-style you like most? Shooty, assault-oriented, psychic-heavy, massed infantry, lots of monstrous creatures, drop pod armies, elite armies, lots of tanks, no tanks, flyer-based armies, etc. What type of play-style you like will define what type of army you should play. Most can be competitive to a degree depending on how you want to build them.

I tell new guys to look at all the armies.

Whichever ones you go "oh those look bad ass" when you see, those are the ones you should play. Because those are the models you are going to see HUNDREDS of times as you pick each model up multiple times repeatedly to paint them.

And pretty much any model you think looks cool, you can make an effective army around. It might not be a winning army all the time, but any race can field a good army.

Almost always true.

But while I think daemons look bad @ss...my natural inclination towards smiting evil won't let me play them.

Tyranids aren't evil...they're just hungry.

Orks just want to have fun.

These are the only two races I want to win.
