I'm in the process of looking for a has for my CSM Sorcerer and came across some which add some height. One seems to add quite a bit, and I've seen home made ones with some additional height too. They usually look great, but my concern is adding too much. What is commonly accepted as awesome and decorative, while still being within reason, avoiding MFA?
Another related question: how much overhang is acceptable? For example, when using cork, bark, etc, how much build up vertically and laterally, is okay? Other than display bases, I've never seen anything that I would refuse to play against. I need something though, the dinky little base the DV Chaos Lord comes with is lame-o.

Height is almost never modelling for advantage because these units tend to be HQs, and you don't want to expose them above low cover to be shot at by the entire opposing army. It won't matter that they're slightly taller and can look over cover, they're just one model, and a Warlord at that. It basically amounts to how high do you want your model being exposed. The big rulebook also covers increased height in dramatic custom bases.
Overhang doesn't matter whatsoever as long as you can still measure from the rim of the base.

Thanks for that. That's what I thought. I'll see how the BRB puts it too.

It does if your opponent does it too and hence you can't get anything in base contact though in that case, you're hardly likely to refuse to play something you've done yourself so can easily be house-ruled as just getting in as close as possible.
Generally, the way I see it is that your base and the model should be forming a roughly tall pyramid. A little overhang is fine as long as it's not too tall. A bit of tallness is fine if it's not going over the base edge. If you push either to excess it should be obvious, and doing both a minimal amount can also be too much.
Interestingly enough, Illic Nightspear and Lilith Hesperax are just about at the limit of what I'd consider to be "normal". They both increase the height profile and have overhang, but this is then reined in by the fact the models are bent at the knees, reducing the height again.

I gave my Belial model a slight height boost so he's talker than the rest of the DW and no one has complained yet. Unless you put your guy on a pillar that's a foot tall I don't think many people will have a problem.

That's what I figure. I was thinking about using the Celtic Ruins bases from Scibor, but will probably just make my own. I'd like to have the sorcerer raised up a bit, as though he's over seeing the battle. It certainly won't take much.

Overhang is usually ignored or treated as a larger base. My Wazdakka technically is on a proper bike base, but hes almost half as much longer so i had him pop a wheelie on a broken road base. Going off proper base size for him is a pain in the butt, so the wheel sticking ~1inch further than the base or the rubble overhang is used instead. The model is just way too damn cool to say i cant field it. Hes never Wazdakka, its always a warboss on bike despite me actually having a warboss on bike...thats how cool this model is in comparison lol.
Its bitten me in the arse a few times, but dont care model is too cool to shelf. Ive won combat with him + 3 bikes remaining and staring down a gunline's turn, consolidate around a corner but the boss's damn wheel was sticking out so he got shot at lol
I suppose, since far as i know theres no ruling in the BRB for larger bases and/or models that have been custom built, if someone REALLY wanted to they could complain but ive never heard of that happening. Ever.
