We keep getting hit with "Premium Minecraft accounts" or "Free Dota2" or whatever from worthless spammers.

Since we cant slit their throats and leave them bleeding to death in their homes, can we ban their ISPs? Report them to their ISPs? Something? Just locking the thread and banning their Dakka account is proving pretty ineffective.

If you ban ISPs or blocks of IP ranges, you're inevitably going to ban non-spammers as well, and it won't help against people who are spoofing their IP's anyway.

My guess is that irksome as the spam is, it's manageable, and Dakka Dakka would rather let 10 spammers through (which is just a momentary job for a mod) then block a single legitimate user.

If we won't block ISPs then we need to report users to them, so they can do the blocking. These "people" can't be invisible to us when they visit.

Just letting some idiot stick their head in your home and start screaming at random intervals isn't a solution we have to be stuck with.

Ouze got it. I don't see it being much of a problem, that's what you have to (unfortunately) deal with when you got an open forum. The only actual solution would be to monitor and manually check each user's first 5 (10) posts but that would mean a lot more trouble for the mods.

There is already discussion on the spam bots a few posts down, but the 100% most reliable way to deal with these threads is to click the mod alert button and alert them to "spam bot". They swoop in on their horses of the Dakkpocalypse and take care of buisness. And besides, who couldn't use Riot points, a premium minecraft account, or a new kitchen.

By the way guys, this isn't just going to block porn.

It is also going to block other evil stuff such as "web forums" and "terrorism".

http://boingboing.net/2013/07/26/uk-censorwall-will-also-block.html

Do you want to block

☑ pornography
☑ violent material
☑ extremist and terrorist related content
☑ anorexia and eating disorder websites
☑ suicide related websites
☑ alcohol
☑ smoking
☑ web forums
☑ esoteric material
☑ web blocking circumvention tools

.. is what the actual list is going to look like.

I'm going to assume that esoteric material probably covers stuff like human rights websites, all blogs and any anti-political or anti-government website.

And yes, this is actually happening.

As a UK citizen, to hell with this government.

As a Brit, if this were the wrong place we wouldn't be allowed here.

DOWN WITH FACIST DAKKA INTERNET FILTERS!

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Also just pointing this out, just found one of the kitchen bots, though from Thailand instead of the usual this time. Even if blocking ISPs was viable, the fact that they could just move like that would quickly make it a bit of a hassle to both Lego and new users.

The best way would be either to keep up the current method, or to add something to the sign up to filter more of them out.

Adding stuff to sign up keeps out dumber bots, but a lot of spam 'bots' are actually real people just surfing the web and posting everywhere they can.

Ultimately, its really not that big a problem. Just don't open those threads (certainly don't post in them!) or report them and move on.

Lego has it all covered from the programming side. He's quite clever, you know... for a human being.

Are we sure Legoburner is actually completely human and not some lego-human fusion with the processing power of a legion of super computers?

Yeah, just flag the thread and move on. I don't think banning ISPs will prevent everything as we'd apparently have to ban all of Romania judging from the last few dozen that I reported.

As of right now they are Romanian(Minecraft, League of Legends, DOTA2) and Indonesian(Kitchens <Insert Location Here&gt.

Like Insaniak said though, report them and move on. Don't post in them.

Posting in them just lets the spammers win. And you don't want to let the spammers win, right?
