Exactly that, how to run saurus cavalry, started small lizardman force while back just been converting five DE coldones into saurus cavalry woundering what the best build would be. I was thinking about going a standard muscian and champion, along side two normal dudes, but what weapons should i go for? Spears or HW?
Thanks any help would be greatly appreachated as i have yet to play WFB and dont have the codex or rule book yet.

Don't you have to take spears with them?
Depending on the points level of game, I would either run them in two units of 10 with command group on the flanks, or just the one unit of 10 with command when I don't have that many points to spend.
Mostly though, I don't bother with them at all. They are a LOT of points.

How about waiting 1 more week for the new army book to drop since they are 99.9% likely to see a change or three?! (along with the rest of the army itself...)

I'll be blunt, they suck! It,s between them and swarms for worst unit in the book.
Their initiative sucks so bad they pretty much get hit first every time. Compare them to any comparable heavy cav and they lose.
Buy more skinks, seriously.

I'd really like to disagree, but I can't.
They need to be less points or pick up light armor in the soon to be released book to compete.
Want to know how I run my box of 8?
I gave 5 of them halberds from temple guard, and run them as Scar Vets, with shields, light armor and halberd; then run a lore of beast magic slaan.
117 point each is steep, but 20 S6 attacks at WS5, T5 and 1+ armor (2+ in combat) is pretty good.
If I get any of the beast buffs off, it's over. 35 S9 attacks if I get Savage Horrors off; or a unit of T8 cav is pretty good too.

Fair enough id expected they would be helped out in that in the new book but thanks for the tip.

Yeah i get that but surely those changes will be balence based, they wont suddenly no longer allow them to take a standard or spear or something. Sorry if my question offended im new to fantasy had some random models and was building them for fun but would like them to be functional too.

Cheers for heads up have heard that alot but i have models as said, new codex may fix if not idc will look cool...
I appreachate the replys everyone but no one touched on what i asked, I was mainly just unaware if i could take spear or handweapons and weather that mattered at all as the box set has a champion with handweapon but the unit has spears?
Thanks again.

Nah, I'm pretty certain they have to take spears. You might as well as having just hand weapons will give no benifits

Hi,
I use Cold One Cavalry quite often with a bit of succes. In the next edition they will be cheaper and come without the spear. Also the Cold One will have one more attack. That means a unit of 5 will have 20 S4 attacks, half of them at WS4 and the others on WS3. That is not that bad imo! Also if the rumours are true you can take an item that makes all cavalry near the bearer Frenzied, that is 6 S4 attacks a model, in my opinion that is really strong.
The problem is that Saurus can do that almost just as good, I mean they can easily dish out 20 attacks at S4. SO what is their role? For a flanking unit it's dishing out an extreme amount of attacks, but not enough to take out heavy cavalry or monsters.. On the other hand, Cold Ones are one of the few units that are fast enough to be flanking units (M7 and swiftstride)

And cold ones are stupid, which always bits me when I get in that outside flanking position.
The rumor on the frenzy item I saw said the mount, not the rider. It's by 5 S4 attacks each.
I'm curious if CoC get Predatory Fighter, and if the cold one gets it too.
Point for point, saurus with spears are throwing out about the same number of attacks. That would mean you're trading armor save and speed for a boatload of extra wounds, ranks, and not being stupid.
And of course, it the Special Choice cav is only as good as the Core Saurus, I don't see me bringing Cav.

Hmm good points thanks for the further input!
Ive mounted the sauras on the DE cold ones and given them spears a drummer and a standard, need to do some green stuffing and they will be ready for a lick of colour! Should have some WIP photos up tomorrow as I just started adding to my gallery and I'm reasonably happy with the photos so far, so it's go time on the show and tell!

New book drops in a few days, but for arguments same I have seen affective units of 6 with banner of eternal flame for monster/regen help:
12 str 5 attacks in the flank helps against certain targets. Scar vet with great weapon and venom added on only helps the unit become more dangerous.
Banner of swiftness is decent as well, m8 in lizard army is awesome. Used to see a player around here run a COC Death Star of sorts because he had the minis. Not the most cost effective unit but it wasn't bad when backed up by beast magic
