Ok so there has been a bit of discussion at our local store over drop pods not being able to fire any blast weapons when deployed. Nothing in the deep strike rules says it can not fire, it actually says it can fire normally (or run for troops). When looking at the codex both SM and SW it just says its occupants can not assault. So they all say it can not fire a blast weapon but no one can show any text from rule book or codex' stating other wise. To me i would say they can shoot or else it would make things like the Deathstorm drop pod worthless as it can not do anything its first turn and likely be turned and blown up. so what are yalls thoughts or do yall have the reference for this, cause id like to clear things up on this one.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Vehicles arriving by deep strike count as moving at cruising speed. (Non-fast) vehicles moving at cruising speed must snap fire all of their weapons. Blast weapons can not snap fire.
Conclusion: drop pods armed with blast weapons may not fire them on the turn they arrive.

So yes, Deathstorms, along with most other vehicle-mounted Blast weapons, are not worth the points in 6th edition.

Then it could be worth the points.

1) Worth the points or not is really not what is being asked. 2) worth the points is really a subjective issue.

Another question relating to Drop Pods, How many models can they carry ??
I use the Space Wolves now but I used to build the Space Marines, SM DP can carry 12 and the SW DP can carry 10!
Why can the Space Marine Drop Pod carry more?

Because it is a different codex, The Space Wolves do not adhere strictly to the Codex Astartes and therefore are penalized for being as close to heretical as possible while still being the faithful lapdog of the false-empero ........ ahem, the Emperor of Mankind's clean-up crew.

It's a known discrepancy, but never corrected in a FAQ.
It's possible the new SM codex will change this back to 10 (to match the 6th Ed. DA Codex), or they might remain as they are as some sort of reason to use the base codex.

It's simply a matter of codex differences Jaymez, BA pods only hold 10 as well. Also, in general it's best to start a new thread rather than piggy back, especially since you have a different question altogether. Lastly, that's not really a "you make the call" discussion as you already know the rules, it's more a discussion question.

It was designed that way, due to the limitations of the tac squad requirements stopping you from taking ANY special / heavy unlerss you are 10 man unit.
So they get to add an IC while still keeping special weapons.

(I'm not sure which takes precedence between Thread Necromancy and Duplicate Threads, so sorry if I made the wrong choice)
Has this been changed in the new Space Marine codex? Especially with the Deathstorm Drop Pods in IA12; can they just fire 0 of those 5 Blast weapons the turn they show up? Especially silly given that they have a rule specifically relating to Panic checks it causes the turn it shows up.

What are you expecting the SM codex to have changed given it was all rulebook rules that prevented this?

Threadromancy most likely, Duplicate threads is for threads still on the first one or maybe three pages, not three-month-old threads.

You'd need to be looking for a Forgeworld FAQ there, it's not going to mention anything in the SM codex about an IA unit.

Something changing the way Drop Pods work, Space Marines pretty much being "the army that has drop pods" and the SM Codex being the newest of those. Like "May fire as if stationary on the turn it Deep Strikes" or "Heavy" or something.

Which wouldn't change the way, for example, Dark Angels Drop Pods worked, without a FAQ...

That's an excellent point. It sure wouldn't. A shame GW isn't always prompt on their FAQs.
Not that it should matter at all. My question was whether the new Space Marine book had something in it allowing the Drop Pods (in that book, if not elsewhere) to fire blasts on their first turn.

Check the DP entry in the new codex that will answer your question very clearly then. Remember YMDC is not a substitute for a codex.

I don't have the codex. I don't play Space Marines. I am not trying to build an army list.
If someone said "I'm looking at trying my all-mech force against my friend's Necrons tomorrow, is there anything I should know?" Is the proper answer "Maybe or maybe not, Tactics is not a substitute for owning a Codex."?
I am trying to figure out one particular point of an army, to gauge in what direction their design is headed, to try to figure out what is design intent and what is unintentional rules interactions, to know what would make sense or not make sense to point out to GW (and/or Forge World) for a suggestion for an FAQ update, and to foster discussion of such.
Hobbs' comment was useful for such; it shows that GW understands (though I suppose perhaps has forgotten) that Pods need a specific rules exception to operate the way they may have been intended to, and that it might have been a deliberate choice to remove that functionality.

Sorry if you do find the answer of 'check the codex' to be a little useless, but we are required to provide that answer in order to protect this web-site. Game Workshop has, in the past, used the cease and desist process for copy write violation in order to shut down websites like these ones. It doesn't matter that no violation is occurring, fair use act informs us we can use snippets of intellectual property for the purposes that this web-site intents to use them for. They will still file the paper-work and this site will be pulled by the host as soon as that paperwork hit's the desk, before any investigation into if a violation has even occured has taken place. Then it is up to the sites owner to fight to get it re-instated and they simply want to try and avoid that hassle entirely. Hence the rule that you are required to direct people back to the rule book/codex is the answer can be found in one of them.
