Dreadnoughts in general aren't the best of choices. You can usually spend your 100-150 pts on something more durable. A slow moving AV12 is just too easy to pick off these days.

If you can score one for $5 though, you can't really lose. I've used some dreads a few times and occasionally they score some good ranged hits and manage to follow up with a solid turn of CC before they finally die. For a similar pt cost, you'd be better of getting a squad of autocannon havocs or something.

At this present time "NO".
However, the model looks neat, the price seems right (no $20 shipping charge!) you may want it anyway "just because".
At a much later date it may become the "in-thing" so if you are in long term: go for it.

Almost same price as a new model in a blister pack... I would say if you do not have at least one, go for it.

For $5-$10, I'd say it's a nice enough model to buy just to add to your collection, on the chance you might actually use it one day.

Competively speaking, no, dont field them.

At a budget/ artisitc standpoint, there cheap and look nice.

They're fun units. So long as you're not playing in a cutthroat tournament scene or something you'll do fine. This is coming from someone who used Chaos Dreadnoughts when they still had a good chance of shooting your own dudes in the back though, so your results may vary

Personally my Chaos army I'm working on includes one, but that's mostly for two reasons - I'm making the army cheaper by using absolutely everything from Dark Vengeance besides Lord Crayon (for budget reasons), and it's a fantastic looking model (which is more important to me than how effective it is).

The WAAC talking heads will tell you that chaos dreads are useless, as are 90% of the units in the CSM codex. My advice is, if you want one and the price is right then buy one and use it. I have 4 CSM armies and all have one or more dreads/helbrutes in them. Yeah they can be easier targets now due to the hull point rules, but so what.

I have 9 different helbrute/dread models in my 4 different chaos marine armies. I actually like using them now that the rules have changed a bit and they spend less time being useless in games now.

$5 is very nice. They are fun to paint/convert and the model isnt bad to begin with.

In an armored list full of forgefiends, defilers, and troops in rhinos they can be pretty nice adding saturation and a few more heavy weapons and attacks to prevent the daemon engines from getting tarpitted. I wouldnt say there are great though.

For the cost go for it. Some times AV12 is surprisingly tough to crack

I've been running one in most of my lists, and while I'm not in an ultra-competitive tourney environment, people still play hard and play to win. There is definitely list tailoring, spamming, all of that fun stuff.
I recommend getting the model, absolutely, and also recommend playing it. That being said I only have found two successful ways to play it; as written, starting at 12" and rushing until it is in range; OR as a ranged fire platform with TLLC/Plas Can & ML.

For that price go for it! Also try it out for fun. You might end up loving it or discovering it has great synergy with your army. Personally I've never liked it. Bad luck with the melts shot and worse luck with the crazed rule have detracted my interest (and reminds me to say be prepared for the thing to just go crazy and do stuff it shouldn't be doing like standing still and trying to shoot guns it doesn't have) but it is a lively model and in certain armies can do very well.

My two hellbrutes act as bodyguards for my forgefiends. They take incoming fire, counter charge anyone that get frisky and add some dakka with their reapers. For 105pts (with the reaper) and the glaring fact they dont take up a heavy slot, ill always find room for them.

While they are singing "what a friend we have in the greater good", we are bringing the pain!

At that price? Buy as many as you can.

Wondering if publicizing "thinking of buying from ebay" you now are going to drive the price up on what you are thinking of buying.

Shhhh.... pretend I never asked, nothing to see here.

I doubt half a dozen guys buying them on eBay because of this thread will drive the worldwide price of them up! There's so many out there because of Dark Vengeance that the market's sorta flooded.

Well it is the only way to get the dang thing (the DV box that is). Just unlike the Ork Deffkopta its not that valuable lol.

Even the Kopta isnt technically that great, but it has its place atleast and can do something before going poof

I think they're nice models myself, and I'll probably get one eventually. I also just snagged 18 Chosen on eBay for $20...guy has BIN groups at $6 and change for all 6, multiple sets. If you want Chosen to go with your Hellbrute, I'd check there. DV models are gorgeous, and very cheap!

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

As others have said... Might be worth it just to buy one, as they're a blast to paint, and all the DV models really do look amazing.

It isn't a competitive unit, no. But it is a very cool model to paint, for sure.

It will definitely draw fire. For 100 pts, that's not a very expensive distraction. And if it's ignored, it is still sporting a S10 AP2 Powerfist that doesn't suck.

I can think of worse $10 purchases I've made in the past.

Yeah as the guys have said. It's a great looking model. Better than the old metal one that I had bought (And then chaosed up an imperial once, which looked way better).

But for Apoc games and the occasionl 100pts left scenario, they're useful to have.

Just wish we could get drop pods and I'd use them a hell of a lot more often.

I quite often run 2 in a list, and have found them to be pretty useful.

Not least as I regularly play against people who run units of fleshhounds ( 18-20 odd in a unit) and they're ideal for dealing with this/similar units.

Anyway, like Macragge and Black reach before it, Dark Vengeance offers a bountiful number of almost absurdly cheap but wonderfully made models in the second hand models market. Like the last two starter sets, you can't really go wrong with buying from them as the models will be dirt cheap and offer a great deal of customizability if you don't want to use them as is.

Did they not have any power klaws? A Helbrute/Dreadnought can and will chew through those models pretty handily (invalidating their T5 and 2 wounds) but I can't imagine Nob Bikers without a power klaw or three.

The brute strikes first, so he will kill 1-2 before the nobs get to strike and then it might surivive a round. Str8/9 and isnt going to auto destroy a dread.

if the dread gets lucky, those 1-2 kills could be the bikers could be 2-3 bikers and they could be the ones who have the PKs.

Still I doubt that a dread is going to get into combat with highly mobile nob bikers.
