I've been thinking long and hard about the new slann. They certainly are less of the magical monstrosity that they once were. At base they're a tough good LD lvl 4 with a stock ward. All good. But output is no better then any other lvl 4 (before upgrades). At 300 points base they are costly. So, do we keep them cheap to try and save cost? Or go all out and spend to make them glorious?

I'm thinking:
Reservoir, becalming, and focus
With: book of ashur, and mr 2 shard.
Maybe BSB with leadership banner for LD 10 slann

How are you planning to build yours?

Reservoir, Focus, Convergence, channel staff (to keep it cheap), BSB and banner of Discipline.
In games with Tetto'Eko, I'll also take Soul of Stone.

I can turn a dispel die into a power die, channel 3 times on a 5+, and have lore master high magic. With Tetto making my re-roll ALL 1's to cast, I take the +/- 1 on miscasts, because Tetto does make more miscasts.

Once I get bored of high magic, I think I might give Wandering Deliberations a try.

If they redo faq so slann can transform. Get higher state and be an ethereal chimera.

I run my Slann without Temple Guard, relying on his 4+ Ward and 5 wonds. I've been planning on doing the same with this armybook. That's one of the reasons why I don't want to go above 400 pts with him, it's to risky. Therefor I run with Loremaster High Magic, which is in my opinion the most powerful option, and a BSB, sometimes I go for either Miscast protection or Reservoir, but I'm not sure which, or just skip them altogether..

I don't play Lizardmen (yet) but I love the idea of ethereal, channel 3 dice, Loremaster and turn dispel into power dice with the channel staff and.. idk, maybe a healing potion or something. Oh, and a BSB.

He'd be loremaster of fire, casting from the back corner of the table through skink priests, he'd be hard for chaff to hurt or beat through combat res but he'd be able to put out a lot of damaging spells. Ideally there would be 3+ priests, one with the flaying cape, another with the ruby ring. Between lore of fire's attribute and the engine of the gods lore of fire spells should be easy to get off with minimal dice and with the 3 5+ channels and 3 6+ channels and the extra dice it (theoretically) should be a hard magic phase to counter.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Cannot have loremaster fire. The option is 4 spells from the basic lores, OR all 8 signature spells OR all 8 high magic spells.

Ethereal costs 60 also. The others are all around 30ish, but that one is pricey.

I can't think of many reasons to not stick him in Temple Guard, actually. Yeah, he can sort of survive on his own. But why? He's going to need to move up to cast, will likely be your BSB/General, can likely buff his Temple Guard, gives them bonuses, it's just win win win. You have to think what you get by freeing your temple guard from the Slann and I'm not sure I see anything huge.

I go Cube, Loremaster, Reservoir, BSB, Jaguar Banner. He goes in a block of 20 Temple Guard, who have the Razor Standard.

Nice, big unit w/ Swiftstride and Armor Piercing

bsb loremaster high, extra channeling dice, manipulate miscast and either save a dp dice or the reroll failed dispel depending on the list, channeling staff and crown.

They say you never appreciate what you have until it is gone. I fear that isn't true for your mind.

300 points for the Slann really is still a bit of a bargon considering what he comes with. LVL 4 4+ Ward plus the other stuff is not to bad. Sure he is no Heavy Hitter in CC, But the fact that the ward comes standard in really nice, as you do not have to use Points to get it. I did a quick Comparison with the books i had around me right now, Looking simply at cost for a lvl 4 with the 4+ ward save, and here is what I cam up with. All and All I would say he is still a little above average as far as points cost go.

8th ed
Slann = 300
Ok Slaughtermaster = 330
TK Liche High Priest 255
VC Vamp Lord = 370 Necromancer = 245
HE = 265
OG = 245

Non 8th
Beastmen Great Bray = 280
Brit Lady = 270
DE Sorceress =315
WE SpellWeaver =290

5 wounds is the bargain. Not many Lord Wiz in the game have even >3.
