Me and my friend are both fairly new to sixth edition after not playing 40k for many years. However, we have both been playing since third. We've played a few games of 6th at smaller points but want to have some fun with the huge armies DA and Eldar we have amassed over the years. What would you say is the best mission for this size of battle? We don't want to have some ridiculous game where the unit that picks up the relic is instantly obliterated by all the fire that can be dropped on it in one turn, but we don't really want to go up to Apoc either. What would you say is the the best mission for this? Custom missions are more than welcome!

I think with games of this size, having a narrative to the battle and basing the mission off that is a good place to start. Most of the book missions are designed for around the 1500-2000pts level, and after that, they become difficult to use, with far more capable of killing scoring units, and often end in either boring draws or one-sided slaughters.

With the forces you mention, I would suggest an eldar raid on a DA position, with the DA deploying within the centre of the board, and the eldar staring from the ends of the table. The mission would look something like this:

Night Raid:
-Night fighting is on for turn 1.
-3000 points of DA deploy within 18" of the centre of the table, preferably around a central peice of terrain. 1000 points of DA become the 'reserve force' (see below)
-Eldar splits into 2 equal forces, and deploys each within 6" of the short table edges. Any units that cannot be placed are put into reserves, whch enter from the same table edges.

Special Rules:
-Reserve force: 1000 points of the Dark Angles are not deployed on the board, and instead automatically arrive from one of the long table edges at the beginning of DA turn 3 (the DA player must make a note of which edge before deployment). Note- I would suggest any ravenwing units are placed in the reserve force to add to the narrative, but this is not imperative.
-Move Swiftly: all eldar units have 'move through cover' for the first turn to represent them moving into position.
-Here They Come: The DA player may select 3 units of sentries. These units may fire as per the overwatch rules at the first eldar unit to move within 24" of the squads.
-Protect the camp: all DA units that fall back will do so towards the centre of the table.

victory conditions:
-At the end of turn 6, the DA player gains 1 victory point for each eldar unit destroyed and each DA unit within 24" of the centre of the table. The Eldar player gains one VP for every unit of DA destroyed, and every unit of eldar within 24" of the centre of the board. Secondary objectives are not used in this mission. Whichever side has most VPs at the end of turn 6 wins, if scores are tied, play one more turn. If scores are still tied, the game is a draw.

Hope this is the kind of thing you are looking for, feel free to use or modify this in any way. I have tried to make it as balanced as possible, but this all came off the top of my head, so may need some playtesting at lower points to see if it works. Either way, I hope it makes a fun game.

That seems like a really fun and non standard mission. I'll definitely have to give it a shot some time.

take a look at the city fight and planet strike expansions from GW both lend themselves very well to large points games with planetstrike being incredibly brutal, both books are a little dated now that we are in 6th edition but both are still playable and a whole lot of fun,

7000 points - Oa,Odym sept and Farsight Enclaves

5000 points - Sable Swords and Astral Knights

@paradigm: that looks really cool. may have to print that out for a future game some day (when I can field more than 1800pts...)

Thanks. To be honest, it should work at lower points just as well, and you can easily swap the armies round as well. Demons attacking an IG encapment, or nids surrounding a tau outpost could both work. I'm going to have to try some of these myself, actually...
