This is a thing.
Apparently assuming you have at least 5 acres of land and the proper permit, you can get a newborn White Rhino for 10K.
Apparently there are a couple of methods like raising it alongside a dog to teach it it's own strength, and pretty much raising the thing yourself from the moment it pops out, feeding it from a bottle.
This is the very definition of domesticated for those who don't know, raising an animal yourself.
They actually become readily affectionate, and assuming "snip snip" is done a male will be pretty comparable to a dog.
They require oodles of attention but no more so than you should be giving your dog.
All in all they make relatively good pets and given their nature aren't at all likely to strike out in their lifetime if treated properly.

Finally found my quote from a gym buddy born and raised in South Korea:
"It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press.
"It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech.
"It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate.
"It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."

This is true, they're pretty predictable however, if you dont hit it yourself it won't hit you. It sees you as its parent.
There's similar chance of the dog who sleeps on your bed lashing out
That said you can survive the dog attack....

Dog's also aren't almost extinct, so IMO castrating a Rhino is fething crime.

They have a steadily growing population and all of these are coming from fenced nature preserves with the numbers tripling yearly within.
It WILL attack dear old dad if not castrated.........
It's also not endangered, its on the population mark right next least concern.

This whole thing just seems like a bad idea. I would never trust a wild animal like that. Dogs are domesticated.

Sorry about that, sounds horrifying.
Rhinos cant grab knifes.....Holy feth that'd be scary
Rhinos are herbivores and are much more predictable than monkeys.
The Rhino in question would have absoulutely no instincts due to generations of captivity and acknowledging its keeper as a parent
Simply put it wouldn't be a wild animal at that point more than a dog would.
Monkeys are intelligent. The more intelligent an animal is the more unpredictable it is. Rhinos aren't particularly intelligent.

IMHO there's a sweet spot with pets, where if an animal can understand love & what implies love, but not much else, that's the perfect pet.
A castrated rhino with a perceived human parent would fit into this category.

I see this as a bad idea for several reasons.

1, They are critically endangered with numerious subspecies going extinct all the time. (wiki says total of 4,000 odd black rhino's remain)
2, Rhino's have pretty poor eyesight and a tendency to charge anything that they can't recognise, with the poor eyesight this is most everything.
3, I somehow doubt it would do well liveing in a random feild outside of southern africa.

Tigers have the tendency to be aggressive for no reason where Rhinos don't.
It's for this reason carnivorous things are automatically questionable pet choices.

The kind I'm talking about is a White Rhino which isn't even threatened.
Hopefully after it first gets it eyesight and sees you it would learn to recognize that.....
I live in a hot part of Texas (hot even for Texas that is) & a lot of the fauna is similar in appearance to South African scrubland.

There is a difference between a zoo (carefully controlled habitat, experienced vets, special diets, etc) and 5 acres of land in say… Scotland.

Or, wait... were you being scarcastic?

That's true. I think that when something is a newborns first sight they would have an emotional response to that.
This is the kind of thing where if you don't give the animal 5 hours min. attention a day you're doing it wrong.
You might even take the first month of the animals life off to socialize with it and teach it.
The only real instinct a captive rhino would maintain is love for it's parents whom it is ingrained to think is its first sight.
They don't develop eyesight for a day or so.

You are right, It is maintained by trained vets and in a controlled enviroment. But as far as location. it means nothing as long as its not winter. And no its not always winter here It actually gets pretty hot here. lol

That is a fact as well. There is an emotional attachment to a newborns first sight.

"Southern white rhinos were thought to be extinct in the late 19th century, but in 1895 a small population of less than 100 individuals was discovered in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. After more than a century of protection and management, they are now classified as Near Threatened and about 20,000 animals exist in protected areas and private game reserves. They are the only rhinos that are not endangered."

Please explain how it's a good idea to make pets out of a species that is still recovering?

it's not currently threatened, its at the population numbers where there's not really concern. In a few years there will be no concern.
As long as the species has its spot in nature preserves like everything else it will be fine population wise,

Well, you can't say that. We don't know who he is. He can be a vet, just as qualified as the people that brought back white rhinos.

I don't think many people can afford a 5 figure pet that requires a small farm's worth of land.
Maybe 3% of nations like the US can actually afford this, and half the people will never be given the animal due to their outlook.
This is to the people who would even want such a pet.
