Dorns, that's not true at all for resin.

It's an art form, but the equipment is not that expensive, and the molds are Definitely not. Wehrkind on this forum has done a lot of casting, for companies such as On The Lamb (Brushfire) and I've seen his setup. It's quite simple! Molds cost under $100, even for multi-cavity molds. It's all silicone.

If the OP wants, Wehrkind might even be interested in casting this, I have no idea really... but I can vouch that it is not as expensive as you think, it's all in the labor and the art of actually doing it well!

With all due respect, if you guys want to continue the personal interaction, please take it to pm?

I think its great that alternative models are here - I usually look at them for just variety (look, another 20 of the same pose...) but in this case, the source inspiration - I don't care for at all.

As a guy who does a lot of designing, building and casting - its a lot of work (art describes the process well...getting good molds and casts takes more than just time and materials, it takes skill in knowing how to do it).

I mainly make stuff for myself, or if I have a clever design for some friends - scaling something larger takes a lot more investment - even if giving designs to another company, thats contracts, business plans, negotiations etc.

Clearly right now, GDB is more interested in making up new designs and offering them to the community through the very cool magic of 3d printing (which by the way, the majority of the price goes to the 3d printing company - they charge out the wazoo for the stuff).

I like the stuff, just wish the better materials were more affordable - I have not explored a lot of other 3d services for their 100 micron prints however.

Just got the test model. This one is in the cheapest "Strong White Flexible (SWF)"

The only thing left to do is model some other weapons and post it. You MAY need to supply your own head for the model.

That does look pretty cool. Although going by the head size, seems like it might be a little smaller than the GW version...

At the price you're quoting I'm pretty interested, think you could do one without the chest icon? I think they would look great with some forge world etched brass icons added if not, no worries I can always dremmel the icon off.

Final design should be up and ready for order tonight/tomorrow. And the painted model shown above has a GW head and Forgeworld icon on its chest, and is printed in White, Strong, and Flexible. The final version will be sold without a head and with a bare chest plate.

So you're going to offer these through Shapeways to be printed-on-demand, rather than cast? You'd get a much better surface finish by having masters made and then having them cast, but that's a bit more involved on your end.

the surfaces don't look too bad. Eh, this looks like it's turned out fairly decent to me.

This way, there is zero overhead and the models are 11 a pop in SWF.

If it was cast, it would have to be redesigned, assembled by you, cost 3x as much, and require several thousand dollars setup for machines/moulds, or the purchasing of a machine just to print these for maybe a few hundred runs.

not worth it

Molds don't cost nearly that much for metal or resin casting, just FYI (I've personally paid for both types of molds for smallish runs of models).

It'd be worth it, I think... "White strong and flexible" material from Shapeways just doesn't have a good enough finish for wargaming models, you'd need to get it printed in "frosted ultra detail" for better results.

Looks decent, but needs a much more hi-rez pic for us to be able to judge properly. Ideally a naked one and an inked one as well as the painted one.

This was covered on the previous page...and on a few other subjects on other threads as well (i.e. why don't you do X...its not that hard for you to change your business model...).

Some people are not interested in creating an entire business that involves inventory, labor, production, materials, sales, shipping, etc - and would rather do what ever method they are currently doing.

So, we should respect that as their decision. Of course, others are free to come up with their own designs, make masters, and going into the business of production and distribution.

I am very happy of the work he has done, and like many of the designs on shapeways - in fact, can't wait to see everyone's take on the gravity weapons...

Dave- I respect it, but a forum is for differing views. He stated a mold for metal/resin would cost thousands, which is not the case, as a reason why he wouldn't do it.

I understand this is easier, and I respect that. In frosted ultra detail material it might even look quite good, but it will be pricey!

I'm not quite sold on it, but it's moving in the right direction, as compared to Centurions.

I'd like to see a little more differentiation in the design rather than simply fixing proportions.

IMHO the head needs to go, the chest piece near the neckline needs to be curved not straight, and rivets lots of rivets are needed.
