Looks like Shrike may not even give them fleet. C:SM assault squads don't get melta, so they aren't much good against vehicles, the RG jump pack specialty may get you into assaults faster assuming you're using the UM Tactical CT. But do you really want them in assaults? I'd say go without jump packs for a cheap drop pod unit if you're intent on using them.

A ton of armies and a terrain habit...

Your right. They need a PF or a good IC to do enough damage to hurt anything.
Otherwise they are there to threaten weaker units and vehicles. They also are good for contesting objectives.

What is this crazy talk? 9 krak gernades + 1 melta bomb will be a threat to everything without an AV14 rear.
You can shoot all day at my wave serpents and I'll laugh. 10 assault marines within 18" of my wave serpents though is a very different story.
