Might be a clear cut case, but are javelins no longer throwing weapons? I've noticed that neither the javelins nor the bolas have the throwing weapon rule, meaning that they would suffer penalties for being fired at maximum range.

Or was that in the last edition?

if your army book doesnt have a different stat line, all javalins are as follows:

12" range Strength as user Quick to fire

Generic throwing weapons no longer ignore that penalty anyhow (Pg. 91).

But yes the the lustrian javelin and fireleech bolas are not throwing weapons as seen on their profiles (Pg.30 and 42)

Damn, that means you suffer -1 to hit unless you are within 3" of an enemy with the bolas. Are they still worth taking? I'm tempted to do so because the thought of a lizard flinging a flaming leech around is hilarious, but I'm not sure if the short range will do them any favors.

They're too situational to pay extra points for IMO.
As it stands right now the javs being affected by strength buffs makes them more flexible.

Keep in mind that the bolas are on flying skirmishers, meaning it ain't really hard to always be withing 3" of your target

That's true. How powerful is flaming? I've never actually used it before, so I don't know.

Flying skirmishers with 40mm bases and fire arks.
A unit of 3 might make it work but you'll have some shooting long range style otherwise.

They get free reforms though, so they should be able to have a clear LoS on most things. I've been thinking of using them to harass and distract enemy formations with their superior movement. Hit them with the bolas, jump on the other side, hit them again, repeat.

36 points for a S4 flaming shot at BS3? Even if you can hub point blank, that is pretty crappy. You're paying 72 points per hit.
A unit of 6 costs 216 points, and if you shoot at point blank all 6 game turns, you're scoring 18 hits.
Those same 216 points could get you 3 Razordons with same extra handlers. Over 6 turns, at three times the range they will wrack up 30 hits, for less points.

If you want to avoid combat and shoot, take chameleons or razordons. If you want a good number of flaming hits, take salamanders. Other than looking cool, you've got no reason to take bolas.
