Whats everyone using to transport there ships and games?
I was thinking about getting the custom cut foam but think I will wait till wave 3 ships are in the template so I can transport all my ships. Was also looking at maybe something like a tackle box to transport the core set

I use foam trays left over from 40k minis.
If you have a small number of ships, the core set holders are great.

Currently have my card and stuff in little plastic baggies and the blister inserts/core set holder thing arranged in the core box.

They're fine, I could spent a feth load on foam for the game, but it's not worth it at the moment. Everything is in a bag, it's snug where it is, and it's better than leaving it in the box. If you're Tom, then you need foam to protect those paint jobs

One of these plus a plastic bin from Target with a plano box inside of that for tokens. All of this goes into a back pack.

The only issue I've had with my ships was last week when I pulled them out to play, and my Advanced and Interceptor's left wings had snapped off at the glue spot, this was before the box was purchased. The minis have been fine ever since.

I know, everything else I own has foam... X-Wing doesn't. More ships will necessitate the need for foam.

thats the other problem I'm having with foam, i really like the sexy battle foam, but that just doesnt really allow for future proofing. With wave 4 being big stuff I'm not to worried about the short term but Ive got to imagine more sexy little ships are going to come out...and I will buy them....lots of them...then be back to square 1. I'd rather not have a boat load of barely full foam

I'm lazy, and decided that the blister inside of the expansion packs was a good way to hold the ships for transport. I have a large-ish red Craftsman toolbox (that I'm not sure they sell anymore, number on the inside is 965406 which brings up nothing) from back in the day that actually accommodates the Falcon and Slave I snugly, and a smaller, black one that carries the rest. That black one can fit, using the blisters they come in, 3 Starter boxes or one large ship plus 10 expansions. It's also reasonably cheap if you have a Sears nearby.
At the moment I have 27 ships, and I believe the 5-7 ships I plan on getting from Wave 3 can be fit in these two pending the size of the shuttle. The big ships and Wave 4 might require some adjustment.
For the counters, I have a plastic parts organizer similar to, but not exactly like, this one also from Sears. I say it's not exactly like it because the one I have has 8 large bins that are perfectly sized for the pilot cards, while that one has more of the "medium" sized ones that fit the damage and upgrade cards. Definitely something you'd want to see in person based on that.
They all stack neatly on top of each other, or if I don't need to bring both sides I can probably skate by with just the red one (or the black one for just small ships) and just use the handles. I'm sure I could go fancier, but under $30 fit what I was looking to spend on the project. More money for ships that way.
EDIT: Snapped a photo of the black tool box, since that one is still in stores. You can see the space for the third starter waiting for me to go get one.

I've only just started so only have 10 ships but I went my usual route and bought a small (half standard size) X-wing KR case. This isn't my picture but I basically have the same loadout; You're storing a fair bit of fresh air with the ships on stands but it saves putting them together again I suppose. It's also useful to have the counters laid out too. I got mine for £24. There are separate trays that hold Slave1 and the Falcon but that's more money/separate case.

How well do the ships fit in the case? They look pretty snug, I'm guessing they dont move around much? Also i've seen some rather poor reviews for the foam for the counters and cards, lots of people mentioning they still move all over the place and dont sit in the slots very well. Whats been your experience?

The ships sit snuggly in the foam. X and A wings bearing between the top of their hulls and the base will not move. Tie Fighters between base and wing top will not move either. Once in they're held there. I would not anticipate any movement and they're well protected. Even if they could move they would bounce about in their soft foam aperture and take no damage I would suggest from my existing experience with 6-7 other KR cases. The foam is soft so as to cushion the minis with the actual protection coming from the surprisingly durable card case (though you can get metal ones too). Sorry if I sound like a salesman but I do like KR, having good utility and a low price they suit me down to the ground. I'm not associate with KR btw just bored at work. In my (albeit limited) experience I do not see that much of an issue with the tokens. When the case is packed they should be either the bottom or middle of three so will be effectively sealed until unpacked. That said I still have mine in baggies just in case. Now that said with two sets of token its a bit cramped in that particular tray. So over all a good ready made solution, like the pre-paints themselves - money well spent.

I can confirm having the same good experience with my KR foam, except my two boxes have two ship trays so I can't speak to their token tray.

I bought the battlefoam tray that fits into the game box. It's pretty good, but with a little cutting, I certainly have improved things. As long as you don't mind the ships rubbing, you can fit multiple Y-Wings, X-Wings, and Tie-Advanceds in the slots. A little snipping, and you can fit 6-8 Ties in the spaces meant for 4.
As far as tokens, I have a separate Plano box for those.
My pilot, damage, and upgrade cards, as well as the maneuver dials fit in a pair of plastic Magic Deck boxes. Those are split up by faction.
I haven't bought anything from wave 2 or 3 yet, but I suspect that I'll get some custom Battlefoam to fit into my second starter box as well.

KR multicases are awesome. I'll be ordering one for my Xwing minis soon. Maybe after Xmas as I'll probably double the number of ships I have by then.

Does anybody know if it is ok to just leave the minis attached to their posts and bases? I ask because I'm planning on sticking magnets on the bottom of the bases and placing them inside those metal cookie boxes. Not the sexiest of means of transportation but they should be moving around much in there.

I would just be worried about the plastic rods snapping...

Because of the weight or banging around? My main reason why I don't want to take the minis off the posts is because I'm paranoid of accidentally breaking something off of the mini eventually.

I'd love to buy things like that to store them but I'm trying to come up with the cheapest, yet effective, way of doing it. My wife is very understanding about my hobbies/obsessions but I want to restrain myself.

You can probably make something similar. Many people with the same situation as you have dealt with the issue of cheaply and securely transporting and storing miniatures. I would just google homemade miniature foam trays or the like.

My TIE Advanced has one rod glued to the bottom of the ship because the first time he was put away, it snapped off (this was before I used my tote ) and the peg was stuck in the hole (that's what she said). It's like the flight stands for 40k, but more important

I have a Flambeau Tacklebox I got from WalMart for like $20. It's holding everything I have pretty well in a really nicely organized way. 1 YT1300, 2 Firespray, 8 Tie Fighters, 2 Tie Interceptors, 1 Tie Advanced, 4 X-wing, 1 Y-wing, 3 A-wing, tokens, dice, rulebook, cards...everything, and still has plenty of room to add LOTS of extra ships. So far the only 2 things it's not holding is my playmat and my Tantive IV. I'll post pics as soon as I can.
