Subject: Restrictions on Codex use at a tournament?

So i have a Dark Angels army. But with the new Marine dex about to drop im excited about the possibility of adding some new units. This would allow me to run it as Dark angels or Vanilla. Now the Question is at a tournament if i turn up with a Vanilla list painted as Dark angels will there be an issue. Ive never been to a tourny but intend to start soon so is there ever restrictions on how madels are painted? Obviously everything will be WYSIWYG

Over here you won't have any problems Chalky, in fact most of the Cork lads use their Marines interchangeably.
NWG certainly won't have a problem with it, as I am guessing that's what you are referring to here mostly.

While some people will give you a hard time, as long as the models are equipped and modeled correctly it's usually not a major issue. That said, do keep in mind the new chapter tactics rules may make this more difficult, as do allies (ie I would not run them with da allies).

You can just invent your own successor chapter that happens to be very close to the original dark angels colours.
Perhaps you can just swap out a few models that have different banners or whatever.

I was told to keep an eye out on the FAQ. If DA are allowed to take anything from the new C:SM it will be reflected in the FAQ. I Would like to run the new AA tanks an centruions with out having to alie.

I think that's expecting a bit much. They didn't FAQ BA or SW to use some of the new stuff from DA, so why would they do it here? If they were intending to give DA a lot of the same stuff they would have just rolled it into SM just like they did to BT.

Yeah, this is rather common.
Although I love the BA scheme I painted some of my marines in, those will simply be allied in if I ever want to run BA allies.
I will likely be painting my remaining marines in Salamanders colors to use the basic SM 'dex.
So, you'll still need to differentiate very clearly if you want to run allies... but if it's a DA color scheme, it's pretty easy to run them as vanilla marines if you so desire imo. Just don't ally in DA's

To me the C: SM codex is more of an arsenal book showing what is available to marines as a whole. And used to create home brew chapters and touch on already existing chapters. It would be nice to be able to pick from a basic list of options to add to an already existing chapter of marines. What I mean is if there are basic tanks and flyers that are not in the DA or any other codex that are new to marines in general why wouldn’t they be able to use them? Because GW didn’t come up with the idea until they wrote the codex? So now every other chapter before has to deal with not being able to use what a common marine can? Your remark about BA and SW not getting FAQed for DA new units. Really that’s because DA are a chapter of their own with unique things to their chapter I’m talking about basic things. Like new weapons tanks flyers. C: SM is a layout of the marine arsenal that every chapter should have access to unless stated otherwise in there chapter codex due to their unique settings. I’m not trying to fight with anyone. I’m just a pissed that they come out with things that fill gaps in already existing codex’s that are now not able to access unless we allie with more marines. I guess “WELCOME TO 40K”

What gaps do two tanks that hit most things in the game on 6's fill? Just because most of the Chapters have the new tanks doesn't mean all chapters should, and I certainly don't think they will. As I said, if they were going to add these units to DA they either would have done that when they released it, or they would have rolled it into SM just like they did to BT. As for the idea that it's only because they came up with them when they wrote SM, that's not how the writing process in GW works. It isn't a linear process where they write the books one at a time in the sequence of later release.
Anyway let's be fair here, this thread isn't about debating whether other chapters should get this stuff, and it certainly isn't about complaining about SM getting more either, so let's not take that away from Chalky.

I mentioned any updates to DA (Due to new weapon types and vehicles) would be FAQED you disagreed and felt the need to prove a point, and so did I. It doesn’t matter if the tank hits on a 6 it’s the point of the matter.

I think the general rule is that you're allowed to use counts-as as long as the opponent understands.

That's how it generally works, yes. Each codex is independent. If you're playing one of the variant Chapters, you'll have to wait until your codex is redone, or use Allies, to get the new shiny.

Thank you sir for the clarification on that. I wasn’t sure how it worked since this is the first time I’ve been around a release of a new C: SM book.

Thanks guys, i had never heard of anyone having an issue i just needed clarification. Its purely because i have a dark angels army and dont want to start a new chapter id rather just buy the new units, add them to my DA and run them as Vanilla marines sometimes. This new C:SM is definitely going to outshine the DA dex :(

Honestly, you'll *gain* respect if you say, " tch - Of course those aren't Dark Angels. I'm using the vanilla codex."
If you actually ran them *as* Dark Angels, then you'd get raised eyebrows. Seriously.
