Hi Everyone,
I have both regular Tactical Marines and SW Grey Hunters. I am looking at both codexes for each and it would appear that the regular Tactical Marine is actually more expensive than the SW unit. I would have expected this to be the completely other way around. Not by much really, 150 for 10 GH and 170 for 10 tacticals.
Is there a reason for this point discrepancy? The only thing that I can think of is the GH do not come with a sergeant, therefore have no access to LD9 in their squad. I also noticed that GH can't take missile launchers. Call me crazy, but I had always thought SW were a bit...OP. But this has shed some new light on this matter, for me at least.
So which ones would you take to fight the Xenos scum?
Thanks everyone!

In the 6th ed C:SM book tac marines are going to be 1 point cheaper instead of 1 point more expensive than grey hunters. They are also going to lose combat tactics for chapter tactics, which overall is going to be better than current combat tactics.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

Combat Tactics
Ability to take 12 capacity drop pods
HQ choices that give them special abilities
Sergeants
Combat Squads
that and most importantly...
AGE!
The C:SM is a fairly old book at this point and, as we will see in the new space marine book, marines are constantly getting cheaper.

greyhunters are a completely broken unit. They are crazy good.
Tactical marines are really showing their age. Of course they are being redone in 2 weeks, will be 1 point cheaper per model and come with a whole bunch of customize-able abilities.

Back in the day C: SM from a previous codex did not come with grenades by default and had to pay 1 ppm. Thus old-school SM costed the same as current Grey Hunters.
Then 5th Ed. made grenades mandatory but you still had to pay for them, it was just included in the current cost.
Whereas GH's and Chaos SM's get a BP CC and Bolter for cheaper than Tac C: SM, plus counter-attack and Mark of the Wulfen and Banners and GH's instantly became the best Troop choice in the game excluding Orks of course

I think the adage that they are the best troop choice in the game is somewhat out dated now days seeming how the helldrake murders all meq like they are grots and wolves have no answer to them. Also fire warriors just shut them down and jet bikes might as well be magic if your trying to face them down troop on troop. All meq are suffering at the moment as looking at the new books how many builds are there where you can easily wipe out 60 3+ saves in a game, in 5th most armies did not have enough fire power now days with bad dice you could be almost tabled by turn 3/4

Grey Hunters are still amongst the most versatile troops in the game, but they certainly are no longer the best.
Tervigons, Kroot, Eldar Jetbikes are all "better" in my opinion, or at least close enough that it's no longer a given.

Only real advantage nowadays if you take GH barebones with 2 special weapons is the fact they get discount on the special weapon and that they are as pointed out a bit cheaper.
I didnt see grey hunters see CC since like release of 6th edition thats why i dont buy the banner and MotW anymore. Just a waste of points in my experience. And there also goes the advantage of second CC weapon and counter assault. But may be my play style.
Advantages of tactical marines now:
They get a seargeant with LS9. Grey hunters only get them through elites section. They can take a 12 slot drop pod. A greyhunter squad in a drop pod either has no seargent, only one special weapon or no independent character podding with them since space wolves pods only have 10 slots.
I dont say tactical marines are better ... they arent. I only say that the days of grey hunters overshining them as much as they used to are over. New c:sm tacticals will outshine grey hunters ... i'll bet my ass on that .

Talking about comparison with C:SW and pre 6th edition space marines codex: GH are simply awesome for their cost, with some minor downsides.
Now the new SM book is coming out, of course GH will compare less favourably than before. It's just codex creep and re-balancing. New space marines will be cheaper and also have access to grav weapons, this difference in power is something that won't change until SW get a new codex in the future and more than likely get put ahead again.

I dunno, I can actually see Grey Hunters going up in cost if they keep the same wargear, or end up ~14pts but have to pay +2pts for a CCW. Blood Claws, of course, will go down in price and might actually be worth considering again.
