What I mean by this is things like you can equip your space marine scouts with 5 bolters (in the rules) but you only get enough in the box to make 4.
I don't know why but it really bugs me as I like my models to be as WYSIWYG as possible.
I can sort of understand devastators but even then its frustrating having to buy 4 sets for 2 squads with lascannons.
Does anyone else find this sort of thing annoying?

Aggravating, actually. Grey Hunter boxes for example. They don't bring a single melta. Not one. You want your GH equipped with melta? Too bad.
But it has a very positive side: Third party suppliers. There's a lot of good looking bits out there, and I'm happy to throw money at the creators for said bits!

It annoys me that I can, in theory, mount four rokkit launchas on my ork battlewagons.
Guess how many are in the box? That's right, zero. Fortunately orks are very kitbash/conversion friendly.
Not thrilled that there's only one skorcha in the deff dread box, either.

Part of the problem is simply that they don't refresh the sprues very often. I think the basic tac squad spruces have been around for 9 (?) years... Meanwhile options generally change with each release of the codex.
Yes, it's a bit frustrating. I'd rather see them put the sprues together in such a way that the weapons sprue could be swapped out when they decided to change up the options.
Of course they have been getting better. If its a kit that has been released recently then you generall have everything you want.

One thing that helps in sometimes you can do a bit of conversion work to another similar weapon. For my GK paladins I needed 4 psycannons (only had 2).
I took the useless psilencer and cut the tri-barrel front off, and attached a single barrel from a different gun. Then took an ammo cartridge from one of the spare storm bolters and attached it to the side. Once painted you can't really tell its a conversion when you stand back and play a game.

IG boxes is horrendously bad equipped, only way to get any special weapon other than grenade launcher and flamers you need to buy a Company Command Squad in order to 1 of each (and this goes for plasma pistol aswell).
The Heavy Weapon Teams on the other hand comes with 3 of each heavy weapon. Automatically Appended Next Post: And then we have the "Vendetta" without lascannons.

Aye, and imho shame on them. 5 resin meltaguns for 6£ + shipping. No thank you, I'll gladly support the little guy for my weapon needs.

Interesting. I haven't had any of these problems when building my Tau...I could see how that would be insanely frustrating, however. Good thing there are several companies that sell bitz for decent prices on Amazon/Ebay.

IG kits are either feast of famine. I want to build a vet squad, well, that would require (if not using a third party bit suupplier):
3 command squad
1 infantry kit
1 heavy weapon team
Heavy weapon teams, well, you get every option there in that kit. Leman russ kits give you every option now. Most vehicles give you all options that are options. However, the valk/vendetta kits dont give you any lascannons other than the nose mount.

One of the few benefits of fire warriors not getting any special or heavy weapon options
Also £5 for 5 meltas is actually pretty good. For multiple heavy weapon options you could do worse than picking up one of the forgeworld heresy era heavy weapons packs. They are lovely models and pretty reasonable prices.

They kind of do. If you only ever buy 2 crisis suits but want both to be armed with 2 of the same weapon then you are stuffed. However cununglyone of the most popular loadouts is 2 different weapons. Also people tend to run a couple of squads with different loadouts, so you can swap weapons between kits.

Yep, the new Aquila Strongpoint has the option to mount up to four heavy bolters on it. How many come in the box? None.

Tac squads are the worst culprit, imho.
Then again, GW are not known for great modelling, they're known for overpriced bs.
Changing what's in the box and NOT bumping prices would cost them not that much extra and go a long way to fixing their rep with many people. Its the only change I've heard suggested that would actually really be viable, GW will inevitably do it at some point to justify a 25% price hike on everything (including fire warriors, for example)
|
I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can. |

Lack of bits is quite striking in kits older than a few years. It seems most things produced around 2008 onwards come with pretty comprehensive gear options, but the old stuff is extremely lacking. Guard and marines are some of the oldest plastics, and as such are lacking the most options, and incidentally are armies which rely very heavily on special/heavy weapons. I'm curious to see what's in the new Tactical kit, and I imagine Guard will get re-done sometime in the future, but in the mean time, you have to expect older kits to lack most of what you're going to need or want. GW's moved away from that, likely in repsonse to the bits market outside their control, but it will take a long time for every range to get properly equipped kits.

Well you guys are lucky , for me Its relay frustrating , just try to make a Tactical Squad with other weapons that the ML/Flamer with the old kits that they sell here in Portugal , its nearly impossible getting a good set of weapons outside ebay , i have over 6000 points of space marines and 1800 of chaos and could not yet get my hands on any Multi Melta . in the stores they only sell tactical squads and starter sets (both 5th and 6th edition) and the price its forbidding (average wage is around 500 Euros and a dark vengeance box is around 100)!

I have somehow been able to get the weapons and other gear I've needed for my squads but generally the boxes most often lack an array of bits needed. As a 10th company player I must also say that the scout box dilemma you mentioned has bothered me always. The bolter is their basic weapon and should be in the box sufficiently to make all the models carry them. Then again... I've never needed the fifth one so far.
IG Veteran squads are sometimes horrible to put together when you start hunting for the guns. I'm a catachan player myself and you only get two flamers in the infantry squad box.
About cultists I will only say that I'm going to need 175 of them in my army project and more than one is getting a heavy stubber and more than one is going to get a flamer. That is a fun conversion project though.
Dark Eldar have been kind to me with the bits problem. The only problem I've had was because I was making two small squads from a single box so making leaders and special weapon choices got a bit tricky.
