I was just wondering what everyone uses for list building...

It might be useful to learn about some new methods and programs!

I mostly just make an army on the spot before playing with pen and paper. But if I sit at home and trying to think up new armies I use word so i can copy paste.

BattleScribe. I don't feel like paying up to use Army Builder nor do I wish to go the YAAARR route.

Army builder all the way.

3 friends and went in together. It comes with 2 licenses for $40, and each additional is $10. So for $15 a head we each have a legit copy (and if you play 40k and are squeamish at $15, you're playing the wrong game, scrooge).

You can crank out lists so fast, and the updates are always same day as faqs. It has a ton of ways to output the lists from a standard printout to individual unit cards, as well as implementing your own images, and exporting to html to put on your phone/tablet. It's just too effecient, accurate, and flexible to not use.

It's true, I am an Army Builder fanboy, but only because they earned it.

Pen and paper. And a calculator.

Then I type it up neatly into excel. Then I take a printed version with me and I have excel on my phone.

Well i do use pen and paper at the store if I am adjusting a list for a different point size. But i usually bring my printed off lists from the word doc with me as a basis when I start doing pen and paper changes.

I've dabbled with an Army Builder, but I still prefer pen & paper. But, after I work out a list (or several lists), I print them out on a Word Document so it's easier to read.

My own software. Developing it open source right now, the project is still in its infancy, but it really just became useable. It's a completely web based army builder/rules tracker. Check out the github repo here:

We find Army Builder to be pretty fantastic in our play group. I really don't trust paper lists when people have all their chicken scratches and add remove stuff. I find that most the time my opponents short them selves when using pen and paper, plus I like the AB format. I will play with anyone but I usually build their list in AB after the game if they haven't to see what I was really up against and often times I find they were short 100 or more points or forgot things they purchased/paid for.

I typiccally use Army Builder for most everything I do but don't always agree with the way they do things. Sometimes they forget to add options or take away options when you make specific choices.

For such a complex system I give them props and mistakes are bound to happen...but you have to keep an eye out for them.

Pen and paper, because you can't get it wrong when you're reading your codex and FAQ in front of you.

Also, the digital stuffs aren't always right.

I use battlescribe, however, I'm making the catalogues myself. The only issue, though, is for 1/detachment units don't quite work right. That being said, half the time I write up my list at the store so I do pencil and paper.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Excel. Have it all formatted so it totals it out off base points, bonus points, and those two added together. Lets me see if I am crossing a threshold of too many points on gear vs just adding more units.
