Land Raider Pilot on Cruise Control

Hey,
I was just browsing the games workshop website when I stumbled across the space marine battleforce and other battle ready kits to buy.
When I started the hobby I could buy the battleforce and an extra tank with the £80 in now costs. I can't spend money like that on a hobby I can only leave to weekends now.
They have essentially used the 'monopoly' effect in which it allows them to raise prices and for what? For me in is in the contract of everyone at games workshop to create and allow for people to play the hobby we all know and love.
What is other people's views on the ridiculous prices games workshop have to offer?
Kind regards,
- Madman12367

A monopoly on their own IP and products??? Unbelieveable! There are plenty of better games out there with almost as rich and intriguing backstories (and I say almost simply because they're much younger with less years that they've had available to be fleshed out). You'll be fine... there is life after GW. That said...just because you stop buying NEW gw stuff doesn't mean you can't use your existing stuff as that only serves to punish you rather than the company.

Me and my friends play smaller skirmish based games with our GW stuff. We play Kill Zone and Inquisimunda. Might want to check those fan made games.

Welcome to the world of other games, there are plenty of them and quite a few of them are really good.
I moved away from GW right after 6th Ed and the price hike that came with it.
And I am honestly much, much happier in the hobby now. I am grateful for GW though, they where my first intro to the world of table top games.

As some people have said. GW ain't the hobby. Even here in the UK gw is slowly dying off. Look at games like infinity, malifaux, hordes, warmachine, dystopian wars and legions, dropzone commander, flames of war. The possibilities for wargaming are endless

Its not that bad if you buy from USA online discounters. 20% off US prices I can live with.
Canada retail I totally agree. That price is ridiculous for some bits of unfinished plastic.
It's a lot of money for a product that requires tons of invested labour.
I notice they are trying to push the model count for space marines. I don't like that.
Just wait until they try to switch to direct only. that will be the day they lose over half their consumers.

"Slowly dying off" is a hilarious statement. They were down what...2% in the UK this year? And even then it's a pretty safe assumption their gross in the UK was higher than all the other systems you mentioned combined.
Hyperbole is fun!!!!

Utilizing Careful Highlighting

It is still quite possible to put together a complete Warhammer army without breaking the bank. I have put together a detailed step-by-step list of the ways to go about this.
Step 1: Don't buy full price battleforces off the GW website. These cost exactly the same as buying all the individual bits and leave you with a bunch of stuff you probably won't run anyway. As a matter of fact, don't buy anything off the GW website.
Step 2: Look at eBay, Bartertown, Craigslist, and our very own Dakkadakka for people selling their armies at enormous discounts. Or one of the many discount online stores that sell at 10-40% off. Use these stores to buy your paints, modelling supplies, and assorted gaming paraphernalia as well.
Step 3: Use third-party models to supplement your warhammer diet. The GW special forces are not going to break through the dingy storefront window of your FLGS and drag you off for questioning for using some reaper minis.
Step 4: You are not under any obligation to use the latest and greatest units to make a viable warhammer list. Heldrakes and Riptides and Wraithknights are nice looking models with good rules, but you will not be crushed underfoot for not running 3 of them, nor will people laugh at you and shun your presence.
By following these easy steps you too can enjoy playing the exciting game of Warhammer without spending too much money. Do not worry, however! You will still be allowed to complain on the internet. It is your patriotic duty as a wargamer to complain about your hobby, and no man or woman has the right to tell you otherwise.

Are you really going to quit the wargames hobby because of GW?
There are a plethora of reasonably priced wargames out there some with miniature lines, some just rules that allow you to use any miniature lines you want.
I personally champion Infinity http://www.infinitythegame.com/infinity/en/ a great sci fi skirmish game, the rules army lists and everything you need to play are provided for free, but there is a vast selection of other games too and the best part, they are usually that affordable that you can either have several armies for one game for the price of a single GW army or play several different games.
Don't let GW send you away from a hobby you really like.

.Tons of games out there, more so with kickstarters out there.
there are more than a fee I am forgetting, I am sure.
EDIT: most of these games you get into for about 100ish bucks or less.
most of these games also don't require a lot of time to get on the table fully painted, such Infinity. 9 -10 minis painted in about 3 weeks. Some of these games have rule books and quick start rules posted online as well.

Since you already have 40k miniatures, I'd recommend using your existing stuff with other rules. Check out In The Emperor's Name for a cool warband skirmish game. Also, I think there's fan army lists for 40k armies if you want to give Warpath by Mantic a try. Aetherverse is another option as it has a complete army construction system. There are also non-free options, but I figured I'd start with free ones.
Then move your purchases of new stuff to non-GW products. You then get the best of both worlds-- you get to keep using your existing collection with better rules and you get the advantage of newer purchases being from companies that won't try to milk you like GW does.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

As others have said, try other games, and contrary to popular belief, you are allowed to try other games while still keeping your existing 40k stuff. Selling it all just to try another out is not mandatory.
Have a good think about what you want to play, as there's a wide range of games out there. Just the new mainstream games off the top of my head.
Do you want to play a 28mm skirmish game?
Infinity (anime sci fi)
Malifaux (Victorian Horror Steampunk (yes, seriously))
Larger 28mm skirmish?
Warmachine/Hordes (Fantasy steampunk)
28mm battle games?
Warpath (sci fi)
Kings og War (Fantasy)
Smaller scale games?
Dystopian Wars (naval steampunk)
Firestorm Armada (naval space combat)
Firestorm Legions (sci fi)
Dropzone Commander (sci fi)
Flames of War (World War 2)
Of course, the hardest part is finding opponents. I've only just managed to get friends into Infinity, and think about trying out Dropzone Commander. A couple of them want to try out Flames of War which I'm not interested in at all.

+1 to this and the other folks who said roughly the same thing.
Calling GW "the Hobby" is like thinking that Tennis is the only sport.
And,relative popularity aside...
Quitting wargaming because GW is too expensive is like not driving a car because you can't afford a Mercedes.
All that said, If you've tried other games and 40k is the only one that appeals to you, your options are to use some of Badablack's suggestions or quit "the hobby".
I keep my 40k armies around for an occasional game, but I quit buying GW products years ago. See the blog in my sig for many examples from a club that spends it's time and money on other games. Since dropping the GW thing, I spend less money, buy 3 times as many figures, and play at least 6 times as many different games.

I don't see how it's an 'inane' thread. There's plenty of people out there who don't realize the extent of games outside of Games Workshop, and stating they're quitting because of 'x' wil bring out people recommending a host of other games. There's nothing wrong with that. We actually have a catch all thread, but the OP obviously missed it and still considers GW 'the hobby'. Stickies aren't always read (as demonstrated, even you didn't realize we had one). The irritating thing is when people sneak other game recommendations into threads where people are happily talking about another game.

DakkaDakka is a discussion forum and people should feel free to express themselves. I can see if there is a currently active thread that is on topic, it would be better to post there, but to consign any discussion of price to a single thread somewhere is more in the spirit of the dickish moderation of Warseer and I'd rather not have discussion topic police except for duplicate threads that are both active.

I find these threads hilarious, personally.
I haven't bought anything for my Orks in a good while, but that doesn't stop me from using the ones i have.
I buy maybe one box of troops or elites a month, as tournament entries, but that doesn't stop me from enjoying the army i already possess.
The hobby is spendy, to be sure, and getting more so, but you don't HAVE to keep buying to enjoy the hobby. You can paint/convert/base the ones you already have.
If you are no longer enjoying the game that's one thing. Feel free to sell off your armies and try something else. Pricing issues would just mean that i stop buying new gak, not selling all the stuff i have already

People post these type of threads because something they like becomes no longer accessible to them. Either because they can't afford it or don't see the value in current offerings.
It's good in those cases where people who don't know about alternatives to find out that they have options.
