You're new to the area, you don't know the meta, but you know its competitive and you want to start a new army...

What do you choose?

As above, play what you will enjoy the most. For me, it doesn't really matter a whole lot who I am playing against.

Or if you really want to win and dont care so much about the army, hang out in the store for a few weeks to see what the meta is, then start your new project.

First choice? Hang out for a week or two, figure out what the local players have no/little experience against, and play that. A dearth of experience on their part will be more of an advantage than any slight difference in Codex power.

That being said, Grey Knights and Nurgle Demons are both pretty easy to learn how to play, which means your learning curve will be shorter, and you will gain a grasp of the required tactics faster.

ATM... Limbo.

I just moved from Stoke, after 8 years.

Moved back home to Northampton to be closer to my family.

Stoke has the single best meta and friendly players I've had the privilege to play against.

I played at the local GW on Stafford Street in Hanley. Good store, friendly staff.

I'm back once or twice a month and will be playing every now and again.

Tau.

1) It's a new codex, so it gets all the benefits of power creep. Just based on this I'd probably be picking between Tau or Eldar (or C:SM if it turns out to be a powerful codex).

2) It's a dedicated shooting army in a shooting-focused game.

3) It has the tools to adapt to a wide variety of situations. Flyerspam popular at the new store? Not once you bring a list full of AA. Trouble with deathwing? Interceptor Riptide pie plates should fix that. Etc. And once you include allies you can be pretty confident that no matter what the metagame is at the new store you'll be able to be competitive.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

ATM, I'm torn between Space Wolves and Vanilla Space Marines.

Not sure what type as yet, but they both seem to be balanced armies that can take out nearly everything.

Space Marines are in a state of, to be determined if they are balanced or not.

I'd say go with Space Marines simply because, with what I see of the current coming codex ( if it is true) it will be a very versatile army that one would not grow bored with. I grey bored of Space Wolves myself since they kind of get locked into a certain play style.

If by new, you mean one that I have collected before, then Dark Eldar.

If instead, you mean just another army, then I'd probably go with a Chaos Legion other than the Night lords (My first and only "real" army. I've got nids from Battle for Macragge, orks from AOBR and some Daemons from back when they were combined with Chaos marines. Wouldn't consider any of them as "my" army.).

I'd lean towards Iron Warriors.

I'd just ask the members what armies they play and what is something they would like to see added to the club/store's roster.

I'll tell you what I tell everyone that posts these "What army should I use thread.

Do your research, look at the models and read the fluff. find that army that you can develop a connection with, it doesn't matter if its competitive or not. if you don't have a connection with your army your not going to be happy with it, and you'll spend way more money then you need to in an already expensive hobby, as you'll be switching between multiple armies.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

Something with at least enough grunt to not get utterly annihilated. Preferably something that few others are playing, to add some uniqueness to my army, and some diversity to the club.

Well as I can't decide, I'm letting my five year old daughter pick.

I seriously cannot make my mind up.

I just hope she avoids Orks, IG, Necrons and Sisters.

I've got £50 of GW vouchers. Should be a fun afternoon.

I don't want to dissuade you from marines, but realize, pretty much everyone has at least one marine army. I would suggest taking a look at what else is out there, I started with Eldar, and I started them up again.

I got spanked when I first started 40k playing Eldar, but quickly figured out what worked, and what didn't. I'd say do something offshoot, I think you'll get better, and be a lot more critical of situations when you can't rely on THSS terminators, and are instead relying on T3 Eldar/DA.

But if aesthetics is what's most important, and you like marines, then go for it. It would just get old after playing Marines vs Marines most of the time, unless you're FLGS has a good mix, hell, start up vanilla blood ravens, they look amazing on the table. I also play wolves, and would have to

say they can play quite differently from vanilla. I would just ask yourself one thing, do I get that F*** yeah! feeling when I think about playing them/painting them/making lists? If yes, pick them up.

Space Wolves are always fun... their codex will wax and wane in competitiveness.... just stay away from all termie WG packs.... waste of points.

Yeah, they do look like a lot of fun.

Loving the models right now.

Those sprues are rammed with kool stuff.

After reading the book, I'm liking the balanced feel of the army. Not too overly cheesy, but not yesterday's codex either.

Having never played with or against this codex, I can't gauge how powerful this was on release.

When it dropped it was a bomb. Now its still a very good codex, but since its aged and doesn't handle flyers well, its dropped off a bit. If you can ally in (or IA it) anti flyer weapons, it will roll just fine. My word of caution: don't get too crazy with all the babbles and doodads you can put on a SW... they still die like a Marine. Be warned, besides Ork players, SW players a religious lot... they'll either recruit you to the cult or burn you if you commit fluff heresy
