So I had planned to start a Black Legion army once the supplement was released as I wanted something new to ally with my Daemons. Unfortunately the supplement didn't take the direction I had hoped, I also realized painting that much black might make me lose my mind.

After those revelations and reading "The First Heretic" ( I'm convinced I'm far from the first one to start a force after reading a ADB book, that guy should be getting a cut of every BT NL and WB kit sold in my opinion)
I decided to do a Word Bearers army instead. The allying with large numbers of Daemons seemed a better fit anyway

I don't get a ton of time to war these days and my Brother is my only regular opponent. As he plays Blood Angels exclusively I try to keep my lists closer to the fun side of things there definitely won't be flights of Heldrakes in this army.

So this is the framework of the 1750 points I have ready to assemble and paint. It should make for some interesting battles and blend well with my fast early game pressure Daemon collection.

HQ:
Huron Blackheart: (My Dark Apostle due to the sad state their rules left them in. That and Huron is such a fun character to use that I couldn't resist)

Troops

10x Chaos Space Marines: 2x Melta Guns Rhino: Dozer Blade
10x Chaos Space Marines: Lascannon Plasma Gun
18x Chaos Space Marines: 2x Melta Guns

Fast Attack
5 Chaos Spawn: Mark of Nurgle
5 Chaos Spawn: Mark of Nurgle
5 Chaos Spawn: Mark of Nurgle

Heavy Support:
Maulerfiend
Maulerfiend
Maulerfiend

So I am starting one of these in the hopes it will keep me motivated to get everything I own painted before moving on to the next project as I've been known to do in the past.

Without further ado, my Dark Apostle:

Up next will be 3 of the Chaos Spawn and then the first 5 marines. I am assembling as I paint as I've discouraged myself in the past by building everything right away to get gaming and being intimidated by the sea of gray staring back at me when I go to paint them up.

Thanks for looking.

So, what we have here is a blog filled to the brim with Chaos Space Marines, painted as Word Bearers, coupled with 3 Dino-Bots ready to smash face up close and personal?

I'm so in! BRING IT ON!

Oh, and I almost forgot: Nice "Count-as" model He looks darn good, but I think he would even look better with some scripture around his armor. Just my 2 cents!

I think the red looks a tiny bit flat, i'm not sure if thats the pictures or not but maybe consider a wash? Other than that he looks great and nice use of bitz too.

Thanks. I completely agree about the scripture. I'm trying to work out a way of doing it. I tried a method using foil but the end result was to frail.

I'll definitely be keeping that effect on the more subtle side. I won't be doing the army in GW's "Toilet papered by kids on Halloween" scheme

It could definitely use a bit more attention. I was so worried about the highlights coming out pink I think I didn't quite get them where they should be.

Thanks for the kind words. The Chaos knight kit really works well with it's 40k cousins.

Instead of going up to pink, have you tried highlighting in orange?

So I plan on using the Golems from Mantic's Kings of War for my Chaos Spawn. For a background reason They're going to be automatons possessed by daemons. But I'm mainly using them because I like the way they look and they are much cheaper than the GW models I don't like.

Golem:

My plan is to paint them so the rock looks like obsidian with a green glow emanating from the cracks in the rock. Having never done this or seen it done I'm not entirely sure how to pull it off.

My initial thoughts are to blend some blue out towards the edges of the stone and then use some realistic water to give it the reflective quality of the Obsidian. If anyone has ever done something like this or has any ideas how it could be done I'd appreciate any pointers.

I probably could have worded that better. In the past I have added too much white to the red mix ending up with pinkish highlights. I overcorrected too much the other way this time. The use of orange is a good call. I'll definitely try it.

Nice work on that Slaanesh Rhino by the way, it looks great.

Yes, orange works fantastic highlighting reds and for the extreme highlight, you can a tiny bit of yellow. I like vibrant reds

Well, a pity, I actually like the "toilet paper" look but I was thinking more like scriptures on the armor (like the pre-heresy) and "tattooed" scriptures if you have some bare headed SM.

Spoiler:

Nice choice for a Chaos Spawn count-as and I dearly wished I had some good tip for painting Obsidian. For me, a great looking "stone" is the Tomb King's Necrosphynx / Warsphynx. BuyItPainted has a tutorial for it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMPN9d7TUrU

That's a great idea. I'll definitely attempt some tattooed scripture on the marines without helmets.

I like the effect from that tutorial. Thanks for linking it. I think I'll try a test of the approach I thought of to see what it looks like first. Nice to have a solid back up plan if it ends up looking much better in my head than on the model.

Should have some WiP shots tomorrow.
