You'll probably see a price drop as well, as it looks to be a plastic/resin kit with the Drop Pod.

The Vulture Gunship went from its original release price of 65GBP(125 USD) to 60GBP(94 USD) when it was changed to the new version.

Although think the shoulder wing should be classed with bunny-eared helmets under 'impractical appendages' (think I would probably clip them and lay flat against the shoulder pad).

Along with most stuff in 40k. Apparently most Space Marines only need a single clip for their Bolt Guns.

Chapter upgrade bundles are all nice and stuff, but I'm confused by the logic behind them. If it's to celebrate/tie-in to the new Codex: Space Marines, surely there ought to be Crimson Fists and Black Templars stuff rather than Blood Angels, Dark Angels and/or Space Wolves who, you know, have their own book.

Here's your "Crimson" Fists stuff:
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space_Marine_Chapter_Upgrade_Bundles/IMPERIAL_FISTS_CHAPTER_UPGRADE_BUNDLE.html

I'll agree that it's odd that there's no Templar deal up. They produce all the stuff already (Rhino & LR doors, shoulder pads, brass etchings).

As the Fantasy branch of Forge World is practically dead, I might as well post general FW news & rumours here:
anonymous source on Faeit 212 wrote:this is what I know from buying beer for the right people in Nottingham

Forgeworld is less profitable than games workshop, this is a complicated subject with many business nonsense theories, but despite the price difference the profit margins are equal at best on high selling fw products versus low selling GW products

without combining the production etc FW couldn't meet the initial demand for its products, this is standard new product buzz, over time it could cope, (see tau for example)

on the other hand, the FW team has a new manager, with basically a whole new staff, including a LOT of jobs in various levels of the supply chain, plus future jobs

also a lot of the older molds (masters too) are wearing out and profits have to be justified in redoing (to be honest I don't know if this is closer to plans for GW to make more older FW models- the thunderbolt has been gone for a while)

rumor among managers is the GW site will include order-able fw when it is updated, the big buzz on this is the chance to sell FW through our tills, which would give us a major boost at a time when our sales targets are being compromised by changes

Tim the Thief on Faeit 212 wrote:Forgeworld Products will on the new GW shop sell like other Products, no credit cards or other stuff needed! FW will increase the production, the factory will be expanded.

Strength of the dollar dropping =/= that large of a change. Your numbers took a 8% drop and made it a 26% drop. Plus the exchange rate in 2006 was an average of 1.7, yours is like 1.9.

The FW catalog also includes shipping in the exchange value. They list Death Korpsmen as ~$60, when the exchange puts them at $54, and about $60 after shipping.

Therefore, I conclude, Valve should announce Half Life 2: Episode 3.

So not only do they sneak in shipping with the exchange rate, but then they also tack on 15% when you order?!

Currently when you order from FW, it uses a true exchange for them (though your credit card), as there is no option to purchase in USD. At shows however, they use the price on the package. If you can hit free shipping, through group order or solo, it is considerably cheaper to just order the stuff.

This is only talking about the catalog prices for mail order, which I doubt anyone actually uses. Because the catalog has to be printed in advance the prices have to use "expected" exchange rates that are on the high side to ensure that FW doesn't lose a bunch of money if the conversion rates change too much. If you order from the FW website you are billed in GBP and your bank converts it into your currency under your bank's exchange rate policies.

Not too concerned with this, as long as the actual models remain the same. I expect to pay a lot for FW stuff, so bringing it all under the main GW website and having the annual price increases isn't all that bad. TBH I've been expecting higher prices for a while, FW prices have been constant for years and not even increasing to keep up with inflation. The only thing I worry about business-wise is moving FW's production to GW methods. Converting everything to plastic kits would destroy all the fine detail that makes FW worth buying, and obviously moving FW over to finecast would be an absolute disaster.

also a lot of the older molds (masters too) are wearing out and profits have to be justified in redoing (to be honest I don't know if this is closer to plans for GW to make more older FW models- the thunderbolt has been gone for a while)

Have to question this a bit though: some of the very oldest kits have been dropped as the molds wear out (supposedly all the epic/AI stuff, if you believe them about anything related to specialist games), but the Thunderbolt hasn't gone anywhere. The old Lightning disappeared recently because the molds were worn out and the designer wanted to re-design a kit they weren't really happy with anymore, so maybe this person is getting questionable second-hand information?

Though I guess they could have meant that the Thunderbolt is OOP and FW are just selling off existing stock before the end, but I'd really be surprised if they'd let such an iconic model go out of production.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I love almost everything about that battlesuit, though I have 2 minor quibbles.

I don't like the vanes on the ends of the guns much, the ones that look like little rudders sticking up from the top and the bottom? I'd cut them off if I were to get this kit.

I don't like the little cog things that are centered in the outsides of the gun because it looks very much like a chaos star (admittedly missing a spoke). I'd prefer not to have any emblems on the model that look like the iconic element of a different faction: they should have used the Tau symbol instead IMO.

The head is sweeeet. Those little sci-fi vents in the chest are sweeeeet. It's a great looking kit.

I don't really like it. You'd think they couldn't possibly do any worse than the stock kit but this isn't really doing anything for me. I kinda like the guns, I can see potentially using one of them instead of the crappy-looking ion accelerator bit (with a lot of modding since there's way too much stuff stuck on/sticking out of it for me) but I don't really like anything else about it, especially the head. I don't know why, it's not a bad idea having the head in a fixed position like that, but the way they did it on this model just makes it look even more strange than the original pin-headed suit. Also disappointed that they left the crooked bits on the front torso for the reactors like that, that's probably one of the things I hate most about the riptide kit and one of the first things I'd probably change myself.

I'm not a fan of the riptide but that FW version does correct some of the issues I have with it and I'd consider trading for it in the swap shop (but don't like it enough to flat out buy it). It does look like a somewhat logical extension of the XV9 hazard suit whereas the stock riptide felt to me like a huh? straight out of left field.
