I still dont exactly understand whether or not you can shoot through one unit - either friendly or hostile- into another unit behind them. I wonder primarily if i can shoot an enemy command squad that is behind an infantry blob, or if mine can be. Are there certain visibility requirements?

You can't shoot through an enemy squad to hit another - unless you are able to see part of the squad behind them without looking between models in the squad upfront.

You can shoot through your own squads though which is why it can be a good idea to put your valuable troops behind a meat shield.

(Basically if you have to shoot between any two or more models of one squad to hit another behind them, it isn't allowed)

Edit: I probably have no idea what I'm talking about lol, listen to the others.

Unless there's a huge FAQ I missed, this is totally wrong. You can shoot through an enemy unit to hit your target unit. You can also shoot through a friendly unit to hit the target unit. In either case, the target gets a 5+ cover save. This is covered pretty clearly on page 18 of the rulebook:

"If a target is partially hidden from the firer's view by models from a third unit (models not from the firer's unit, or from the target unit), it receives a 5+ cover save in the same way as if it was behind terrain."

I have an added question to this. Can i shoot through my own vehicles into enemy squads? For instance 5 termies following a landraider. Can they shoot straight through the landraider to an enemy unit in front of it?

no, because the termies can't draw line of sight through the land raider

No, it works both ways. You can shoot at anything you can draw a LOS to. If your LOS passes through the spaces between models in an intervening unit, the target will get a cover save. If the intervening unit completely blocks LOS, then you can't shoot at the blocked unit.

1) Get down and look from the model's perspective. If you can see part of your target (head, torso, arms, or legs) and it is in range, you can shoot it. It doesn't matter if it passes through another squad or between the legs of an MC.

2) If you can't see any part of your target (for example, a big land raider is in the way), you can't shoot it (unless you have a weapon that specifically does not require LOS like barrage or an impaler cannon).

3) If you can see part of the target but the shot passes between the models of another squad, then the target gets a cover save.

If you can see any part of your target's actual body (heads, arms, legs, torso) you can shoot them. Doesnt matter how theyre concealed, long as you can still see some of them (remember guns and "wings" do not count for normal models, but wings count for vehicles)

Regardless of who owns the models in the way of your target, Intervening Models comes into play which is a 5+ cover save. Remember this can happen by your own dudes, ive negated some of my own shooting before at guys in the wide open i would pen the armor on, but i walked something in the way so now they get a 5+ cover and saved a few wounds >.<
