I figured this would be applicable to any and all sports fans out there. Some of us just like our teams, some of us love them to bits. But some of those teams don't seem to love us back.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Sydney_Rabbitohs

To drive it home, winning the first three games of their 2007 season was their best start since '72...and they haven't won the actual premiership since '71. I would have to be nearly twice as old as I am to have been on earth when that happened.

These guys are my and my family's team, and tomorrow night, if they win, will be the first time that they have finished a season in first place (we call it the minor premiership over here, since the finals still have to happen) in my life.

So dakka, what rubbish teams do you follow? Do any of them have a record to challenge my beloved bunnies? Have they seen any amazing revivals in the last few years/at some point in your lives? I'm just in such a damn good mood about this all that I wanted to share, and hear your stories as well.

Does the University of Kentucky's Football team count?

Because the amount of support they get compared to the basketball team is hilariously bad.

Their prime reason for being kept in the league is "foundation" status - ie they were one of the original teams when the league was started (unlike -say - the Cronulla Sharks, whom were split from St. George dragons).

Newtown Jets were a foundation team, too. They got cut years ago.

Time for the vorpal bunnies to leave the house.

They should cut it back to 12 teams. This is the perfect number. Low enough that even the judiciary players and refs can count to it.

Leave the storm, whatever-the-QLD-team-is-called-this-year, newcastle and wollongong in, and cut the main Sydney pack back to 8 teams.

This way it will help restore the "feeder" zones (where the main clubs used to harvest their players from originally) and they aren't all trying to buy each others' players.

I will say one thing, though ...

... You bunnies supporters just don't know when to quit, do you?

C'mon, EVEN a kiwi owning the team doesn't shake the faith.

Well played, but Holmes a Court is an Aussie, and to be honest I would have let anyone help him float the club, even a Tasmanian *shudder*, let alone a Kiwi. And yeah a few less teams would help, but I think it would be clubs like Penrith, Knights and Tigers who should get the axe ahead of Souths /unbiaseddecision

On another note, what is the largest family group to play for one team in the US? Souths currently have 4 boys massing 468kg between them from the same family, and they are pretty entertaining.

I don't support a rubbish team, but they're currently having to work their way back through the divisions from the bottom as a result of a liquidation event, and it has given other fans plenty of ammunition to mock us. Well they had better enjoy it while they can, because we've taken the first step back towards the top in winning the league last season, and are on course to return to the top tier sooner rather than later.

Cleveland... that's all I really need to say.

The last time a Cleveland sports team won a championship was way back in 1964 (Cleveland Browns - American Football), the year my dad graduated from high school. The last time we won a championship before that? 1948 (Cleveland Indians - Baseball), the year before my mother was born.

Every Cleveland sports team is garbage. And yet, like an Alzheimer's patient... I root for them with the same enthusiasm as I did the previous year.

Well, with me it depends.

The NFL team I root for wins a lot. My college football team is mediocre, although their basketball team is usually pretty good. My NHL team wins a lot. On the other hand, I grew up with no real NBA affilation, so about 25 years ago I adopted the L.A. Clippers simply because they were losers. It's actually kinda fun following a team like that and watching them try to build a winner. I had NO idea it'd take as long as it did for the Clippers to really turn around, though. Still, now I can saw I was with them all the way (although I'm really not a diehard fan or anything).

In all fairness, basketball is not a sport in Kentucky, it's a religion. When I lived in Louisville, you could either worship UofL or UofK. IU heretics from across the river were barely tolerated. Anyone else would be dragged out to the center of town and stoned to death. While not a die-hard sports fan, I do try to pour myself a bourbon and watch the annual UL vs. UK basketball game, even thought I've been out of state for a couple of decades now.

On topic, my baseball team of choice is the Chicago Cubs. Who have pretty solidly sucked my entire life.

Absolutely no group on this earth can compare to the sad, yet obscene loyalty that "Leafs Nation" shows to their woefully inept team, the Toronto Make-ya-Laughs.

No Stanley Cup win since '67, AND no actual Stanley Cup appearance since their last win either!
Yet every single year, their home arena plays to sold-out crowds and every year, Leafs Nation begins planning the parade after the team strings together at least two wins... (never mind that those two wins come after an 8-10 game losing streak! )

The Loafs have been so bad over the past decade that they went something like 7-8 YEARS! without a single play-off appearance, and only got in this past year due to the shortened season helping to skew the results. (and even then, they damn near blew it in true 'Losers Since Sixty-Seven' fashion!)

Say what you want about other teams like the NFL's Browns... At least most other rubbish teams get suitably punished by their fanbase who eventually get fed-up and refuse to fund a bunch of losers...
Leafs Nation on the other hand is so blindly loyal and hopeless that Toronto is the richest fething team in the NHL!!! (while holding the current record for longest on-going Cup-drought)

To quote a local sports talk radio host, "Cleveland is a drug addict! And their drug is GARBAGE FOOTBALL! I hope they all get meth teeth!"

This is from a guy who has lived in Cleveland most of his life, is a die hard Indians, Cavs, and Browns fan, yet has no problems dropping his support when the team is doing terribly.

We love our sports teams and tend to support them no matter how bad they are. The only problem is that the Indians have sucked for the past 13 years, and it's starting to show in attendance (11,000 people last night in a stadium that holds 43k). The Cavs fans are "refreshed" because of the Lebron years, and now that they've tasted the NBA Finals, they want to go back again. Browns fans will probably never give up their fandom simply because we lost our team. The Browns moved to Baltimore and they won a Super Bowl there, so we'll probably never give up on the Brownies again. And while the Steelers and their fans might not consider the Browns rivals anymore, that game is always one to be at. I honestly love watching the AFC North duke it out, hard hitting, tough football. Best division in the NFL.

Well, 'Leafs Nation' has already planned out an early draft of the parade route for the Stanley Cup, since they're convinced this year is going to be "The Year!"

Unfortunately, the current parade route is simply the one that costs an admission fee & leads to the trophy room at the Hall of Fame!

Hey, I suffered through the '80s. The Steelers were pretty darn mediocre throughout that decade, and the Pens didn't get good until the end of the decade even after Lemieux came on board in '84. Pitt football also went from a national title contender to blahsville, where they remain today. Certainly the '90s and '00s were a good run for Pittsburgh sports, though. Other than the Pirates, that is, but I was never a Pirates fan.

Now Pirates fans -- they're a loyal bunch. Certainly attendance has been poor until recently, but put together 15-20 years without even a single winning season and show me a city that'd show up in big numbers for that. There are fans in their 20s who are too young to remember a winning season. The Pirates have a great history and Pittsburgh is a good baseball town if the Bucs are remotely competitive, it's just that people have forgotten that fact amid the ridiculous streak of despair.

Yeah, the Pirates have been on fire this year, truly deserving of any post season success they have, best of luck to them! The Steelers (in my lifetime) have always been a dominant team in the AFC north, granted I really only got to experience the Steelers from 1999 to present as I was just a young 'un back before the Browns left for Baltimore, so I never got to experience mediocre Steelers, or the Cardiac Kids for the Browns.

A few of my friends are wanting to go see the Blue Jackets play the Penguins in Pittsburgh (as they know/feel that the Penguins will win, and it's better to be in Pittsburgh win or lose than to be in Columbus win or lose). I'd like to go see the Sens play the Blue Jackets, but my only chance is to see them play in Columbus, Pittsburgh, or Detroit... idk if I could handle those places should the Sens win (though Pittsburgh sounds safest of all).

Their comedy routines are at least highly entertaining, since even a surefire victory is never safe when we're talking about Toronto!

I'm still recovering from the hysteric fists of laughter after watching what is likely one of the most epic-fail collapses in sports history when they blew a 3 goal lead with barely over 10min to play... and then lose the game & series in OT.

Suffice it to say, I had more than a few sympathy cards to mail out the following day!
