So I picked up the new vanilla marine codex in order to get a small allied force for my Tau that I will with time build into a full space marine army. But I cant deside on what one.. I was thinking Black Templars for melee ability.. But I wanted psykers too (As my Tau and my Necrons have none..) and I was thinking Crimson Fists.. But.. They look a bit similar to my friends Ultramarines.. (Though Pedro Kantor is awesome) I just cant deside on who to make, So I desided to ask here, What chapter (tactics) for vanilla marines are best for Tau allies? I want to use a bit of everything from the vanilla marine codex.

There's never a 'best' for anything, it's always situational. Raven guard and white scars are nice for assault or at least putting pressure on your opponent. You have to pay a bit of a tax on the White Scars special character to get that scout bonus though. If you like the space marine vehicles then Iron Hands are good. I wrecked havoc all over the board with my "It will not die" Land Raider this weekend. In total it suffered 8 hull points worth of damage and managed to kill slightly more than it cost but it soaked up SOOO much fire it wasnt even funny. Crimson Fists are nice since they use the Imperial Fists doctrines (which are good) but allows you to use Pedro as opposed to Lysander (Pedro is better imo). Don't see a big point in Salamanders or Black Templars. Honestly if your looking to paint you dudes as a non GW chapter, just play a few games with whatever doctrine you want and choose which one you like the best afterwards. Personally, i'm partial to Iron Hands/Imperial Fists in that order.

I've made a list here for my Tau/Raven Guard allied list. It's not meant to be competitive, but it should be a lot of fun to play.

Allying with RG should give me a new opportunity to make use of my stealth suits. Their infiltrating, combined with a homing beacon, should allow the RG to deepstrike in right beside them without scattering.

Might play like gak, but it also might be a lot of fun too.

Hmm.. I'm kind of leaning towards White Scars, Raven Guard, Or Iron Hands.. I want to use a bit of everything from the Space Marine codex and I want to be able to melee a bit too. I will start it as a small allied force and then slowly build it into a full army.

Ultras of course. You get fancy twin-linking and some buff to assault, but more importantly, you can bury Tigirius somewhere that he can use is fancy powers benefiting the tau.

Id also go ahead an auto-include a techmarine just about always so that you have a second person handing ATSKNF out.

There's only 1 "correct" answer to this question....make your own chapter. Seriously, pick your own paint scheme and use whichever rules tickle your fancy that day. There's literally no reason to pick one of the big name chapters unless you are completely in love with the lore, paint scheme and never want any flexibility ever again.

You can also mix and match chapter tactics regardless of having painted your army a particular way

actually at the start of the whole chapter tactics thing it mentions that some people like to make their own chapter, and if this is the truth to just say which one they are a branch from.

Couldnt be more obvious that you can just wave your hand and POOF your pink Ultramarines are now pink Salamanders lol

Black Templars use the Codex: Space Marines ally chart now.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

The designer note very specifically says to replace all references in previous publications to Codex: Black Templars with Codex: Space Marines using Black Templars Chapter Tactics special rules. The Ally Chart very specifically says that you use the row on the chart that conforms to the codex of your primary detachment.

Black Templars are a special rule in Codex: Space Marines, not a codex. The 6th Edition BRB is a "previous publication". I'm sure eventually an FAQ will come out, but the language in the Designer Note is very clear.

Reasonable Marines.

There is some old fluff kicking about of an Imperial Fist marine visiting the Tau as part of a diplomatic mission.
I'd do a small IF force to represent this.

If the thought of something makes me giggle for longer than 15 seconds, I am to assume that I am not allowed to do it.

Interestingly, as the thread in YMDC showed, it "very clear"ly means either of two opposite things to different people.

I take the opposite view to you, for instance, and believe it means that you take the Allies Chart from the BRB and replace the "black Templars" line with a line saying "detachments from Codex: Space Marines using Black Templars chapter tactics". In that case, they then have to use the original Allies chart.

As I say, people read it both ways

Before this codex, Lysander and a unit of termies were EXCELLENT allies.

How are they looking now in that role?
