A thousand marines, right? So if dreads don't count, could you have millions of dreads (theoreically)..?

Well, GW is offering a one-click sale of the Ultra Marines chapter which also has dreads. You could count up the marines and do some math there to see if Dreads count or not, I guess.

Dreads and vehicles don't count (which is why the Adeptus Ultra is almost 1200 models) so yes, if a chapter had that many dying soldiers worthy of being in dreadnoughts it technically could have millions. If you want to do that I'd suggest playing as a 20th chapter and making fluff to justify that (ex: many heroic battles, barely won with most of the chapter left dying in every battle). I think that would be a very fun game to play, say a genestealer army vs. a dreadnought army with Venerable Dreadnoughts being HQs and Furiosos being elites. I think that would work.

I am so, so, so tempted to make a Dreadnought codex right now... Oh my god!!! xD

Haha, if you do that I'll have to make a Genestealer Cult codex! Actually those both sound like really fun ideas... My friend does have a lot of old Dark Eldar and I have a lot of tyranid bitz I could convert them with (granted they wouldn't be all that great).

Too bad I wouldn't be able to play against you with that theoretical dex but I'm sure my SM friends would love to play with an all-dread dex. And I doubt any 'Nid player would be opposed to a Genestealer cult.

Now we just need a reason for there to be thousands of Dreads...

Would this work?

UNNAMED SPACE HULK - SECORIS SYSTEM
YEAR: 996.M40
--------------------------
1000 BLOOD ANGELS DEPLOYED...
RETREAT INITIATED.
SURVIVORS: 50

Granted it's only hundreds and not thousands...

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Surely they'd just replenish the numbers instead of installing them into Dreads? (My friend's response)

Hmm.... Maybe they're a fleet-based chapter who doesn't follow the 1000-marine limit (like the Black Templars) who is on a centuries/millenia-long mission in xeno space to cleanse the galaxy of those xeno filth. After so long in xeno space most of their soldiers have been mortally wounded and placed in Dreadnoughts.

Shall I set up a separate thread for this?

EDIT: Oops sorry for multi-post.

Yeah, you might want to set one up XD. And if you want, you could make a P&M blog for it, and you could incorporate chapter history, FOC, ect. into it.

Yes, they do. They're full-fledged Battle-Brothers. However since they can be in service for centuries on end and are often replaced in their original rank by a newly commissioned Battle-Brother, they often become surplus personnel. However since most Chapters don't have many Dreads in service it doesn't matter very much towards inflating their overall number.

My Armies:
5,500pts
2,700pts
2,000pts

Vehicles and their drivers, Librarians, Apothecaries, Techmarines and Chaplains doesn't count. Scout company also have more flexible limits, so some chapters could have opt to 250 scouts in one company, and Exorcists even have two scout companies. This is why codex chapters in full strength usually numbers 1100-1300 and in some cases could even reach 1500 marines.
