If someone could please highlight the pros and cons of each of the choices above, and which would be best for a new 40k player - to start I can get the battleforce of one off the above

"The meaning of victory is not to merely defeat your enemy, but to destroy him, to completely eradicate him from living memory, to leave no remnant of his endeavors, to crush utterly his achievement and remove from all record his every trace of existence. From that defeat no enemy can ever recover. That is the meaning of victory."

Good Ol' Texas

BA are really unforgiving right now... And really dull compared to vanilla marines.

The big con for BA is how expensive our marines are. We pay 2-3 points more per marine for less functionality.

The pro is that we have the prettiest marine kits in the game, IMO

If you want to play competitively, BA might not be the best choice.

I was thinking of playing competitively, yes - So what would be the best choice?

Good Ol' Texas

DA have some nifty builds with IG right now that are kinda silly

SM just came out so I'm not sure how they're doing. The coolest lists on paper that I've seen are:

Salamander Drop List with Vulkan

Ironclad Drop List (IH or Sallies)

Super Unkillable IH Chapter Master of dooooommm (CM w/ TH, Shield Eternal, Artificer Armor, IH)

WS 1st turn LR charge

Better version of Ravenwing with Khan (WS)

-----------------------------------

Hope this helps!

Well, when you say Ultramarines, do you mean the actual Ultramarines, and their chapter tactics within codex: space marines, or do you mean just the general Codex: SM book, which includes the Ultramarines and a bunch of other potential chapters?

If you're a new player you might want to borrow a copy of the codex to look at each of the different chapter tactics? They build quite a bit differently.

Yes, I was thinking about doing either ultramarines, the iron hand, salamanders, space wolves or Dark angels

I seem to be getting more interested in DA and SM (IH) It just depends on how much a 1000pt army will cost money wise :/, Does the space marine strikeforce contain a basically ready army?

Dark Vengeance is a great way to start a DA army, and it is really cheap too

The space marine strike force is a basic army with 3 troops, 1 FA 1 HQ and 1 Elites about 1000 points total (conservative estimate) and if you buy from thewarstore.com you can git it 20% off price and can put the savings back into making it a real IH army (add a techmarine/MOTF to your list)
Dark Vengeance makes an army of 2 HQ 1 troop 1 FA and 1 Elites of about 600-700 points (dont have the new book but thats about how much in the old one)

Well, the beauty of marines is that power armour is still power armour, and a bolter will always be a bolter.

Pick whatever chapter you want or make your own. Then either magnetize some specific weapon options, or buy the specific models for the codex you want to field in a particular game.

This way, you can own one marine force and run them as every power armour codex you choose, so long as you have appropriate WYSIWYG. This is easily done for C:SM, C: DA, C:BA and C: SW.
