Subject: 'Coca-Cola prints “YOU RETARD” under bottle cap'
Coca-Cola is apologizing after tempers began fizzing over the words “YOU slow” were printed on the inside of a vitamin water bottle cap. It was found by this Tacoma, Washington man’s daughter, who lives in Canada.
“I said, ‘you’ve got to be kidding,’” said Doug Loates, father.
Yea, if that’s not bad enough, wait until you hear this: that word particularly struck a chord with Doug. His other daughter, 11-year-old Fiona, has cerebral palsy and autism. What are the odds?
Coca Cola’s defense?
“Coca Cola said the words printed under the caps were part of a promotional campaign in Canada, where a random English word was matched with a random French word,” said Doug.
In French, that word means late or delayed.

That just seems a really bad idea for a promotional campaign. I mean, the odds of something offensive popping up being one thing, but seriously, just putting two random words in two different languages? What are you trying to sell me with that?

It changes the link but not the thread title? Weird. As for the contest or whatever, it seems just like a fluke. I speak french, /riˈtärd/ just means slow or late depending on how you use it.

Because when you say, "Hey you're a slow" people find that offensive. When talking about in the medical sense, there are better and more apt descriptors for it. Mental retardation is slowly working its way out of the lexicon of medicine.

FOILED BY MY OWN FIELD!
While I agree that words should not be gotten rid of, as we learn more about the various mental handicaps, the term "retardation" seems less apt. But unlike words like, 'ungood' instead of bad, we're finding that mental handicaps are not just a delayed firing of synapses, we're finding out more and more about the various mental conditions that plague us as a species. Truly a remarkable thing to not only know of our own mortality and fragility, but often times to know the extent of how truly fragile we are as a species.

There have been cap code games for decades. they have been words, numbers, random codes, pictures, etc. This time, they just put the dictionary in a randomizer. People need to get over it.

I thought you could use retards here as the paint-related context; i.e. I often use retarder when doing big paint jobs so the paint doesn't dry out on the palette. The glycerin acts to slow the rate of drying.
looks like 2 out of work.
Unfortunately despite the fact this is a painting-oriented website the other, unacceptable use is still predominant so the filter is appropriate.

I say people need to sue Coca-cola for a few big ones. Being this bad at marketing should be considered a criminal offence.
Getting offended by a randomized event doesn't justify a lawsuit. This is why the US is known as one of the most needlessly litigious countries in the world.

I think the word in French would be 'retardant'.
And the article isn't quite correct, in French, the word filtered here as 'slowed' means exactly the same thing as it does in English, and is just as insulting for the general populace (and outdated for the professionals). It does relate semantically to 'late', but to say 'you are late', we say 'tu es en ''slow'' ', while to say 'you are slowed', we say 'tu es retardé'.

The word for late in french is slow. Even through verb tenses it never gets changed to retardant

What I don't get is if the marketing campaign was supposed to make sense. No, I know marketing is...
What I meant to say was: are the sayings under the caps supposed to be intelligible? It's super hard to make enough 2 words sentences... let alone while mixing languages...
