Subject: Blood Angels Starting Army - 500 points

Ok I've lowered the points value to just 500, I want to get the base of my army sorted. This is what I came up with:
125 - Librarian (1) Jump Pack
140 - Assault Squad (5) Meltagun, Power Fist, Meltabombs
235 - Tactical Squad (10) Plasmagun, Multi-Melta, Combi-Plasma, Rhino
Seems a very straight forward list, wanted to add a bit more shooty to the list than assault hence the tactical squad.
The main thing I'm looking foe feedback on is the equipment each unit has. My thinking was that the Assault Squad has the close combat charging weaponary while the tactical squad hops out of the rhino and can shoot every weapon so long as they are in 24" range thus everything being 24".
Anyway what do you think?

about the best you will get at 500, double up when expanding. if you are new and want to use tactical squads, buy a battle force. combine the death co bits with the other squads to build a ten man assault squad and ten man tactical squad with some. unique blood angely bits.

Yeah I was thinking along those lines, do each unit in the battleforce have all their sprues as if you buy them seperate or is that not the case? Thanks
I have an assault squad, tac squad and custom librarian already, so I might but the battle force when I expand to 1000. Automatically Appended Next Post: I could use the thunder hammer on the assault sarge, would that be better than pf and mb?

No one got any more suggestions?
What about the new grav guns? I heard BA could use them?

IIRC Grav is not in the BA codex unless you decide to use regular SM rules (which are, at the moment, slightly better in some areas.)
I'd drop the Librarian's jump pack and just give him wings of sanguinis. Cutting another 25 points somewhere -- the power fist, for instance, will allow you to pick up a Sanguinary Priest. Freeing up points for a JP for him will give the assault squad a lot more survivability.
If you're going to be playing 500 points a lot, I'd suggest scouts. They are about half the cost of your normal marines so you can wind up with a lot more bodies to hold objectives.

Slightly better?
SM lib is 45% cheaper than the BA equivalent.
Scouts are 15% cheaper.
Tacticals are 12.5% cheaper.
Assault marines are 6% cheaper.
And you don't HAVE to buy vet sergeants for a squad if you dont want to whilst BA have to auto pay for it.
Lets look at BAs other two troops.
Neither is scoring.
Death co is cheap for what they do... but they need the charge, and to be guarenteed the charge they are going to NEED either jump packs for a WHOOPING 15pts each, need to be transported in an expensive land raider, or need to risk being shot down inside a stormraven. Therefore they become overpriced for what they do.
The other unit is hit and miss. IF you get it into combat (needs a raven) it is the best thing since sliced bread. Especially if a nearby libby casts prescience on it. But minimum 5 dc to take it and it needs a raven. So if taking death co dreads you need to build a list to incorporate them.
Oh and a SM ravens missiles are concussive for no extra points.
SM captain cheaper and better. Can be upgaded with fantastic wargear like a build your own bear.
Chaplains also cheaper (although take up an HQ).
Chapter master 130pts... compare it to a reclusiarch for the same points. Enough said.
Access to master of the forge for nice options.
Lastly for HQ, their techmarines dont take up an important elites slot.
Sternguard 12% cheaper.
Vanguard vets with jps 27% cheaper.
BA have access to fast vehicles (brilliant but expensive)
Furioso (fantastic)
Baal (Solid)
Sanguinary guard (exceptionally expensive)
And priests (minus corbulo, the buffs they bring I find are only just worth their price or not worth it at all)
SM have:
Honour guard (proper honour guard with 2+ and access to relics)
Crusader squad for BT
Land speeder storm
Ironclad
Legion of the dammed
Centurion assault squad
Stormtalon
Bikes for troops
Centurion devestator squad
Thunderfire cannon
Hunter
Stalker
Relic blades
Grav guns
Chapter relics
And some nice special issue wargear such as auspex and digital weapons which can make a lot of difference (auspex for 5 points is awsome).
Anyway the point im making is that they are more than 'slightly better'.

Yep. You seen the astorath DC list i put up yesterday? I figured that the weakness of podding dc are they are vulnerable to the charge... so why not drop 3 dc units while another jumps across the board?
