Roughly as title, elaboration to follow:

TLDR: vendetta, 20-40 guardsmen, chimera, leman russ; can I successfully use some or all of that as allies for the marines in my shiny new codex, or should I leave them to their own devices, and seek answers to AA and cheap scoring within the marines codex itself? I have one storm talon, no new AA tanks.

Right, so back in 5th ed I picked up some guardsmen for kicks. I had a chimera laying around and ended up with a valkyrie (with enough lascannons in the bitz box to make a vendetta) and a leman russ as well. The sponsons are gone, but I should be able to manage any turret.

I picked up a batch of Mantics corporation marines to serve as not-guardsmen after I cannibalized my minimal cadian contingent to do scout conversions. This leaves me with the means to run at least a couple of vet squads, or possibly a minimum sized platoon, with CCS (or a commisar/primaris, if that's preferable) to go with my guard vehicles (and if someone doesn't like "not-guardsmen", I'll just find another game I guess ).

My marine contingent has a storm talon, and a smattering of most of the other available units save for the newest releases. My question is: should I bring in the allied guard to support my marines since a storm talon is not enough AA by itself, or is there some issue with doing so. As in; the guard I have aren't a good mix for allies, or I'd be much better served by just picking up the new AA tanks and allying in a second chapter of marines etc.

I haven't nailed down a specific chapter tactics, and tbh, my DIY will probably flop tactics regularly for fun and variety. So what I'm asking is more related to can the guard I've listed be effective allies for the marines in the current state of the game, or should I not bother to paint up their vehicles and seek answers within the marine codex itself.

Thanks for reading, looking forward to trying some of new/better units out, but would hate to leave my mostly painted guard on the shelf if they can still be useful

If you've got the models, go for it. Vendettas are amazing AA.

One of my favorite "ally modules" for my CSM is a Melta CCS w/ 4 Melta Guns and an Astropath in a Vendetta, then Harker Vets w/ Plasma Guns and an Autocannon, and a Manticore.

Allows you to bring in the best of the IG codex, take a no-fat mix of units that synergize with other things (i.e., Huron infiltrating some units), and boost your Reserves rolls by 1 (which is important if your primary detachment is CSM with 2x Heldrakes.

Tier 1 is the new Tactical.

Yeah, I was also considering the astropath as a way to get the vendetta and storm talon (probalby escorting it, haven't looked yet if it can escort outside its detatchment, know it can't escort outflank) in asap without tying myself down to an aegis.

I've got 5 models left till all of the not-guardsmen are done, just felt like painting them. But, I probably won't bother painting the vehicles unless I actually intend to use them.

I mostly ask because I've barely been keeping up with the shifting 40k meta lately, and weird things like top their tau and eldar are bouncing around, makes me wonder if my dated thinkery is way off the mark or not

I'm still planning to use my Vendetta and Leman Russ Squadrons as allies. Guard are almost never a bad ally, at least in my experience.

I play Space Marines, Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Astra Militarum, Militarum Tempestus, Chaos Space Marines, Dark Eldar, Eldar, Orks, Adepta Sororitas, 'Nids, Necrons, Tau and Grey Knights.

Well, regarding the shifting meta, Fire Warriors castled up behind an ADL reeeally hate Manticores. If you use Manticores in casual settings, they perform very well, but their true beauty is in tournament settings where people are relying on their ADLs for cover. You just ordinance barrage their asses with the Manticore and it's lights out!

Thats the... one with all of the giant missiles? I may have to look into the conversion sprue sometime, they may like hanging out with thunderfire cannons, which are a favorite.

If you play against a lot of Geq type of armies that hide behind a defense line a leman russ eradicator wont be a bad idea. Throw some heavy bolters on for sponsons and you got yourself a good base of fire support for putting out some wounds on units as well.
