I am looking at using scouts more and I was just wondering how people use their scouts (sniper, bolter, shotgun, cc). How do you kit them and what are their rolls. How about using the LSS?

Thanks

Snipers. Close combat or shotgun scouts in a Land Speeder Storm can be a pretty decent way to go as well.

Since 6th has come out bolters are much better than shotguns.

Bolters are solid in 6e, sniper rifles are still meh. I think the new LSS storm rules rock so my vote was CC. There is a lot that scouts can't handle in CC, and there is also a lot that 4 kraks and a melta or 16 S4 attacks at I4 can squash. As long as they have their fast open topped transports scouts should be able to dictate when they enter CC.

Chaos isn’t a pit. Chaos is a ladder. Many who try to climb it fail, and never get to try again. The fall breaks them. And some are given a chance to climb, but refuse. They cling to the realm, or love, or the gods…illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is, but they’ll never know this. Not until it’s too late.

I always take 10 sniper scouts in my marine lists. Use them to camp home objectives / shoot whatever they need to. They always seem to do something useful. I also give them camo cloaks and try to keep them in cover. One of my favorite units, and now that they are cheaper I love them even more.

On the CML for the LSS the rules state if a model is hit it must take a blind test so I assume that it doesn't need to wound in that case just cover them with the template. Am I correct?

A lot depends on what you need them to do.

Snipers are fine backfield objective campers, although being able to take a heavy in a 5 man tac squad makes them a little less important then they used to be.

CC/shotgun scouts are good for bum rushing other players backfield units, particularly with a LSS.

Bolters are a compromise, but still work. Good for mobile firepower vs. soft targets.

What chapter tactics you have will impact effectiveness. 'Fists get a lot more out of their bolters for example.

I generally field a unit of snipers. When the mood takes me, I will occasionally include a unit of CC/shotgun scouts. Bolters are a rarity, as I feel I get enough of them in my tac squads. Once I work through my backlog of models on my workbench, I intend to grab a LSS and field non-snipers more often.

20 snipers have a very good chance at killing a Quadgun in a single volley. The trick is to ignore the squad manning it and shoot the gun.

I used to use massed ratlings to clear for vendettas. Now I'm using them to clear for Storm Ravens.

So the ability for an entire squad to be able to pick out characters/special weapons/upgrades/etc. is meh?

I run them cheap with sniper rifles and camo cloaks. Usually, I don't expect them to survive too terribly long, and lately, they have become priority targets for my opponents. They work well when close up and getting LOS on priority targets. Once they get their job done, I'm not too worried about them surviving.

Well, I'd consider two kinds of builds: Sniper Scouts and Scouts mounted in a Storm.
Bolter Scounts are good if you give them bolter drill. CC Scouts should be left home since this edition is about shooting.

do vanilla scouts get Chapter Tactics? I don't play them, so I don't have the codex.

Can Dark Angel scouts get access to the landspeeder storm or would I need to go for allies to get access to it?

Yes they get chapter tactics.

No, the land speeder storm is a dedicated transport in C:SM.

I'll agree also that they're meh. I've had way more times than not that they faulter and do absolutely nothing that actually take out a priority target. I gave up on trying to target special characters with them as most IC's have some form of invulnerable save and just save the precision shot anyway. I'd say they're better at picking out special weapons in a squad though. And I'll also agree with you in that for some reason my opponents usually target them with more than one unit. I think they make a so-so distraction unit for a marine player and may get a wound here and there. But using the math of it all, you have a chance that less than one model will get a 6 to-wound. So unless you're running 20 snipers and they all shoot at the same target, I'd say again that they're meh.

Sniper rifles are quite decent as they have the precision-shot special rule. How many models do you usually have in an army with this rule?

A unit of 10 snipers if positioned well will usually pay for themselves by one of the following

- pinning a advancing unit
- hurting t6+
- sniping out a unit with percision
- looking bada$$

I just came up with a new idea how to use them scouts.

Equip the 5 man team with bolters, take LSS, upgrade to multimelta. (combi-something optional.)
Now deepstrike, disembark, try to blow up a tank/transport with the MM, and have the scouts gun at something.

Cheap, efficient, pain in the ass unit to hit backfield.
Niether the storm nor the scouts take much effort to remove, but hell they will be annoying. and require two units worth of attention to kill.

But this is loony. the sane way is snipers.

And why is there no "scout" IC? I want a damn scout-only army to be possible to build, even if subpar.
