Well, calling wind a finite resource is one way to think of it. There is definitely not infinite wind. Wind also has a large impact on the weather and might or might not influence the global temperature. I doubt anyone in this forum actually knows. What is ridiculous is thinking that the scale of wind farming we have now having any impact on the wind resource, even locally. Clearly he is backed by big oil...

Also, what are you thoughts on the 85% of the government still actually working even though it is shutdown? I work closely with the government and I haven't noticed any difference. I think it's funny because everyone thought the world would end, but maybe some of the Republicans were right, nothing really happened (except now we are spending less money which is kind of what the Republicans wanted anyway).

NO! That is not one way to think of it! There isn't infinite wind in the same way that there isn't infinite solar power. If we run out of any one of them, you have much bigger problems than energy shortages...

Wind is caused mostly by two effects, differences in atmospheric pressure and the Earth's rotation, you literally would have to build a solid wall around the world that would reach up to the exosphere (?!) to have any effect whatsoever on the winds... Wind farming has about as much effect on the wind as a tree (which is none whatsoever)!

Wind farms do have effects on climate, mostly in local scale, but those small scale changes will eventually result in larger scale changes. As more farms are created, we'll see more like it.

Now, keep in mind these effects are small, and anything that would cause serious effects are most likely a long long way down the road, so it's not something I'm overly concerned about.

I'm more concerned about their drastic effect on bird populations. One farm has killed 67 Eagles (Bald, and Golden) in just 5 years. That is one farm...

ummm, to the above, you know they plant trees all around farms, to reduce wind erosion right? trees very much have an effect on wind, so do wind capturing turbines.

just as a water turbine on a dam will affect that rivers flow, so do wind turbines affect air flow, it does not require a "atmosphere high wall" anymore then we need an "ocean spanning dam" to affect local eco systems with green energy systems.

no resource discovered so far is "infinate", and while wind certainly has no adverse effects at this level of useage, we dont really know what would happen if we took the same KJ/hr from wind as we do from fossil fuels. you cannot take energy from wind, without, suprise, taking energy from the wind, so at some theoretically high usage point, it could very well have unforseen affects on the enviroment. wether these effects are along the line of milder winds, redirected winds, or just decimating bird populations, is yet to be seen.

no one thought burning all these fossil fuels would heat up the earth either, till we started burning enough to heat up the earth...

Most studies state that the mining of the materials, manufacture and transportation of the wind turbines have a higher environmental impact than anything else related to wind farming.

Also as far as bird populations are concerned, do you know that 150 million birds are killed every year by collisions with cars and buildings in the US alone (I think that was the number, I remember it being shockingly high)? 67 eagles in 5 years seems rather low compared to those numbers.

You do realise that trees stopping the wind from eroding the soil comes much more from the stabilizing effect that the tree roots have on the soil than from any wind stoppage power from the trees themselves, right?

Anyway, I think I understand how those politicians keep getting elected now, so I'll excuse myself from this discussion. Take care and remember to be happy.

Cars actually kill about 60 million a year. Cats kill about 500 million a year. These turbines kill another 1.5 million, which on the scale of things seem small, but the number of turbines are just going to grow, and they are going to affect populations that cars and cats don't normally reach. It's estimated wind farms kill 80,000 raptors a year. The Bald Eagle population doesn't even number 200,000, and humans (before turbines) were already responsible for 1/4 of their deaths. That number is just gonna keep climbing.

It's easy to make fun of shutting down open air parks as long as you turn of your brain and pretend that there is no ground-keeping crew that have to clean those places every single day to keep them from becoming a hazard.

I can certainly empathize with shutting down the large parks because... people get lost all the time. Or, and I was wrong at first, removing the handle on drinking fountains because it's used as a shutoff valve to prevent water damage in the cold.

But... trash?

I don't care... as a parent, I'm responsible for my own spawn. If there's risks because it's a pigsty, then either a) we don't go or b) assume responsibility. Besides... I thought you couldn't sue the government like that. (don't know for sure if that's true)

We've had garbage strikes here in the past. The first few days, even the first week, generally isn't a big deal.

Believe me, it gets ugly.

I think that it's folly to believe that just because a week and a half with a shutdown isn't so bad, that it wouldn't be a big deal for it to go on. Things that are funded currently won't necessarily remain that way, possibly seeing more services operating at skeleton crews or shut down entirely as funds run out. I know people who are worried about getting benefits they rely on to make ends meet who are concerned as to what impact this will have if it stretches on for another few weeks.

Just like with the debt ceiling, ending up on the wrong side (probably) won't lead to an immediate Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome scenario. But it'll cause problems, and things will start getting bad, and people will suffer.

And sadly, by the time it personally impacts (the royal) you or someone you care about, it may be too late for a simple fix.

Government employees can be sued for negligence. Letting people hang out in a park without any kind of maintenance or support staff can mean that the person that decided to keep it open without any staff can be the person sued.

Fidelity Investments has sold all of its short-term U.S. government debt. That limits losses for the country's largest manager of money market mutual funds should the U.S. Treasury run out of money on Oct. 17.

NEW YORK (AP) — Fidelity Investments, the nation's largest money market mutual fund manager, has sold all of its short-term U.S. government debt — the latest sign that investors are increasingly nervous about the possibility of a government default.

Money market portfolio managers at Fidelity Investments started selling off short-term U.S. government debt a couple of weeks ago, Nancy Prior, president of Fidelity's Money Market Group, said Wednesday. While Fidelity expects the debt ceiling issue to be resolved, the Boston-based asset manager said it has taken steps to protect investors.

"We expect Congress will take the steps necessary to avoid default, but in our position as money market managers we have to take precautionary measures," Prior said.

Fidelity, which manages $430 billion in money market mutual funds, has taken similar actions in the past. The most recent instance was in the summer of 2011, when the U.S. government came close to a default and Standard & Poor's downgraded the nation's credit rating, Prior said.

The sequestration didn't cause the mass panic and terror the left was hoping for so now they are trying the same thing again with the shutdown and debt cieling.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is open yet Rangers are blocking the parking lot to a privately run Inn.

WW2 vets are threatened with arrest but a pro amnesty rally is allowed to be held on the National Mall.

Moodys says the National debt can be paid without raising the debt cieling yet the President is preaching global apocalypse.

Well I had typed a reply earlier on my phone but...

I'm going to interpret you refusing to answer the question, and trying to distract with "I'm rubber, you're glue...etc" as you can't defend disagreeing with me.

But I'll answer your question, NO.

The evidence is quickly mounting up to prove that the ACA is a disaster and is failing to deliver on any of it's promises.

When you have the son of Jimmy Hoffa whom declared that he would lead Obama's 'Army', now realizing that the ACA is not at all what he thought it was and asking for his union to be exempt, we call that a clue.

When business are incentivized to cut peoples hours back because it's now cheaper to pay the penalty than provide health care, we call that a clue.

When health insurance have doubled or more in price for the same coverage we call that a clue.

When some states still can't show that anyone has signed up for the exchanges, something is clearly amiss if the ACA is so great.

I would say that the anti-ACA crowd has been justified in it's criticism so far.

Now, as has been pointed out, the Left always uses extreme language and even outright fantasies when it attacks the right. Of course they get a complete pass and even endorsement from the main stream media.

So, the House Republicans have just offered Obama a deal - 6 week extension, but it contains a poison pill - Obama wouldn't be able to use any extraordinary measures (citing the 14th amendment or minting trillion dollar coin, ect.) to avoid a default. Basically, a 6 week gain, but it means that if Republicans now have an iron tight grip on the Debt Ceiling hostage. Seems they're trying to look like they're negotiating, when really they're throwing poop at the wall.

Obviously this is just image damage control, because they're losing the PR war pretty badly at the moment, and are now less popular than ever before, even more unpopular than during Newt Gingriches shutdown or Bill Clinton's impeachment.
