Scenario - Not your friendly game with a friend on a friday night. You're at your LGS playing.

Curious ... Does anyone mind if your opponent measures where your moving / shooting distance is to avoid getting into it?

Also, what about initial deployment? Do you allow other peoples to measure your deployment and how far they can shoot before they deploy?

Page 4 of the Basic Rule Book will inform you on what measurements you are allowed to make and when you are allowed to make them. It is the first paragraph under the title of 'measuring distances,' top right hand side of the page, and the related sentences are all bold to make it easier to find. Therefore I will only mind if a player breaches this part of the book when it comes to measuring, and I will always allow the legal measurements to be taken.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Hmmmm I never knew it was that permissive, we have just been measuring whatever we want whenever.

I'll have to check that out when I get home.

Sadly I think trying to prevent people from making "certain" measurements will turn me into TFG, since it's been allowed for so long amongst us.

pointing it out and suggesting that you play properly. is not tfg behaviour.

You can suggest to your local gamers to play corectly without being tfg, it all just comes down to how you go about it.

At this stage in 40k, however, 'proper' play is that you can measure any distance at any time. So trying to prevent people from making certain measurements could easily be TFG behavior.

I have, before, broken out my flamer template during the movement phase just to make sure my flamer guy was in the most optimal spot. When my opponent asked if I was allowed to do that, I reasoned that the flamer template was nothing more than a teardrop shaped measuring stick of about 8 inches, and he laughed and agreed.

But that's exactly what the rule is: "You can always check any distance at any time."

My point was you could be tfg and just spring it on them saying "no you're doing it wrong" or you could point it out while you're just chikling with your mates and say "hey check this out, we've been doing it wrong. Lets try to do it the right way so when we play other people or at tournies we do it right.".

The second way is not being tfg.

Absolutely, but in this specific case they were playing it perfectly correctly to begin with.

Clearly you can't use the template. you must take several linear measurements and slow down the game while you do some trigonometry to determine what your flamer can and can't hit! j/k

That bit is even in bold in the rulebook...
