So, we have 2 threads on the shutdown. One is essentially pointing the finger at Harry Reid, and the other points it at the Tea Party. Both of them are obviously highly partisan threads in intent and in execution.

So, lets have a thread that will serve to unify us a little. More specifically, unify us in disgust.

Senate elders denounce suspension of death benefit for families of fallen

Sen. John McCain speaks on the Senate floor on Tuesday.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

The Senate sat in almost total silence Tuesday as two of its most respected members denounced the suspension of a benefit that helps families of fallen soldiers meet their flag-draped coffins — an unexpected side effect of the government shutdown.

The benefit, known as the death gratuity, wires $100,000 to families to help them cover funeral costs and travel to receive the bodies of their loved ones. It was left unpaid to the families of five American service members killed in Afghanistan over the weekend.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. and a veteran himself, told his colleagues that they should be ashamed.

“Shouldn’t we as a body, Republican or Democrat — shouldn’t we be embarrassed? Ashamed?” he asked. “What do American people think when they see that death benefit for those who served and sacrifice — they're not eligible?”

Waving a copy of a news story about the suspension, he said: “I’m ashamed! I’m embarrassed. All of us should be.”

Sen. Harry Reid, the Democratic leader, called a rare live quorum in the Senate and joined McCain in the denunciation. In a live quorum, the leader instructs the sergeant-at-arms to get the whole Senate to show up on the floor.

It is usually used to force senators to cast a vote one way or the other. In this case, Reid did it simply for speeches. So it meant that most members of the chamber were sitting at their desks and watching — rare for speeches in the Senate.

The Senate drama came during a day of building outrage over the suspension of the death gratuity. Veterans groups said they were disgusted, and military families said it was inexcusable.

Members of Congress seemed taken by surprise that it had happened at all.

Congress passed a law last week to pay the military during the shutdown. Pentagon officials studied it to assess whether it might cover the death gratuity and determined that it was not possible, a defense official told NBC News on Tuesday.

Republican aides in Congress said that they were drafting legislation to restore the death gratuity, and that it could be put to a vote as early as Wednesday. The aides also said that they believed that last week’s law had covered the payment.

"We gave broad authority to the Department of Defense to pay all kinds of bills including this," Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, said Tuesday afternoon. "And frankly I think it's disgraceful that they're withholding these benefits. But again tomorrow the House is going to act specifically on this and I hope the President will sign it."

“I would say it’s wrong, and it’s going to be fixed,” said Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., whose district includes a heavy military constituency.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a Republican from the same state, addressed military families and said: “Your government has let you down in a time of need. There’s no excuse for this.” He added: “This is not an acceptable way to run the most powerful nation in the world.”

For now, however, the $100,000 payment, meant to tide families over until military survivor benefits kick in, is being withheld for relatives of the fallen.
Seventeen service members have died since the government shut down Oct. 1, a senior defense official said, including six in Afghanistan. None of the families of the
17 received the death gratuity.

Yes, Senator. McCain. We should be embarrassed and ashamed.

PS if we could not turn this into the finger-pointing of the other threads, that would be swell. Feel free to avail yourself of one of them, if that's your pleasure.

Same. The DoD managed to get its civilian employees back to work. Hopefully they have a way to get this money following again.

There should never have been any question whether this should have been funded or not. You do not ask people to be prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice and treat them this way.

They just took in the account of those serving to be paid. So they pass a bill to make sure the military is paid. Forgot the death benefits portion. Boneh....eerrr... Beohner(?) screwed the pooch when he assumed there were enough money to pay the life insurance and damn near said it to. McCain took them to task in the Senate and then Reid from what I understand called a "qoureum(?)" and took the Senate to task to.

I just hate it when military is used as a "beat stick" against either party and/or POTUS.

Possibly, but then even the bill to back-pay federal workers, which passed the house without a single vote against it from either side, have been held up by Senate Republicans, so if a bill is passed, it might still be held up by tactics like that. Maybe not, of course, but it's really hard to tell what people like Cruz and his allies might do.

A private foundation has offered to cover payments until Congress gets it resolved.

I disagree. If the government is shutdown everything should be shutdown. This includes Obama's golf course.

Things which have been funded keep operating. Things which haven't been funded have closed down. This is why there's little rhyme or reason behind what gets cut off or shut down - many things have been funded in other bills or in other ways and aren't relying on the continuing resolution at all. Every story which makes a big deal that "X keeps going while Y has been shut down! Why is Obama doing this?" tends to skip over this point.

So you are in favor of kicking the veterans out?

As much as I agree that it sucks that these payments aren't being made, it still smacks of political grandstanding to shift some blame around.

It was deemed a first amendment issue and was allowed to go through, the same for veterans visiting the ww2 memorial that were granted access there.

which shows that it was closed for the vets, but not really closed for an immigration "rally" ?? I am failing to see how that is equitable, or right at all.

Do they not realize that the DoD has trained generations of Combat Engineers...whose job it is/was to break down reinforced barricades?!

On Monday, at exactly 10:43 a.m., the government approved the purchase of a $47,174 mechanical bull for the Utah National Guard. At the same time, 7,000 employees of the Veterans Benefits Administration were being furloughed thanks to the government shutdown.

The National Guard put in the request for a “Mechanical Bull Sales bull which needs to be durable & low maintenance” on Sept. 14. And, unlike the 7,000 preschool children enrolled in Head Start whose low maintenance eating and learning needs are not currently being met, the government came through with a bull.

Lt. Col. Hank McIntire of the Utah National Guard told CNSNews that the mechanical bull is used by recruiters at “fairs and other events” to “draw attention” to the message of recruiters. So when the last bull “broke down and was beyond repair,” they put in an order for a new one. And they got it. Because nothing says "here's the message of the National Guard" quite like a fake bull usually ridden by drunk moms celebrating their naughtiness on "Ladies Ride Free" night at the Crazy Horse Saloon.

I had no idea mechanical bulls were so pricey.
