SOB have some of the oldest models in the range and they are really great from a quality standpoint.
From a play standpoint, they are in a good place right now competitively (mostly because of a reliance on MCs from Tau/Eldar) but don't have a lot of variety.
They are getting a new codex (Kinda) on the 19th of this month. More info here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/554140.page

The metal model quality is fine. And while this is debatable, I like most of the sculpts and think they are (almost) all pretty darn good.
And they play well. They catch a lot of flak for their rarity, but they can put out serious mid/short range shooting, especially against elite infantry. And yeah, pretre is right, hey are getting a mini-update of sorts on the 19th.

The Sisters have very good close range firepower and some nice tricks in the game. They have a really good close combat character but the rest prefer to shoot - alot.
They are a bit short on L/R firepower - relying on Exorcist missile tanks (which are great), Heavy Bolters and Fortifcations. AA is also a weakness unless using Ageis and FW units.
Nice models that look good and have character.
New Codex looks to make them a little more flexible - but best to wait and see what people say after the 19th........

The metal minis are very high quality, but offer only limited sculpts and poses. Additionally, they are often hard to find, and are sold either individually or in packs of 3, which makes them one of the most expensive armies to collect.

You can get away with no greenstuffing at all on most of them.
Sisters at 500 points is brutal and awesome, especially once the new codex drops.
Under the old one, it was pretty much Celestine + 2 Battle Sister squads with meltaguns + Immolator and you could own anything else at that points level. Since the new codex allows smaller Battle Sister squads, you may be able to get even more fun stuff in there - in any case, with Sisters, the smaller the game the more powerful they are.

Not in my experience. All of the troops are two piece models (trooper + backpack), so no putty work is needed there. Saint Celestine may require some putty work, but the one I assembled went together without any issues.
Penitent Engines on the other hand require a master degree in engineering in order to assemble properly.
Seriously, though. Penitent Engines are a real beast to assemble. Buy lots of green stuff if you plan on fielding them. And pin. Pin like your life depended on it!

Just be prepared to invest a fortune for a relatively small number of models.

I personally love the models myself. I haven't greenstuffed any of my sisters and I've made out just fine.
The new update will give us the ability to take 5 women squads which will help us enormously in smaller 500pts game.
Because they are so rare people often underestimate them or are just plain flat out unfamiliar with them so you can catch your opponent off guard once and while

Or buy them second hand from eBay, bartertown or Dakka's own Swap Shop and avoid the costs of direct-only.

Problem is that the availability of actual Sisters models, second hand, has never been that great (let's face it, SOB have never been a widely popular army, us fans are just very die-hard).... if you can get them somewhere other than direct, jump at it, cause good deals on Sisters don't come around terribly often.

I don't think I've ever had a time when I did not see a couple offers at ebay when I looked for SoB. The tricky thing is getting what you want, from where you want (shipping), and for a good price. I'd recommend collecting based on offers, and spending at least several weeks with this process, rather than just buying everything you need at once no matter the cost.
Anyways, the miniatures are absolutely amazing (so much so that I'm one of the few who do not even want plastic Sisters for fear of losing the "feeling" of the weight, as well as the risk of redesigns that end up not looking as good). Their only downside is that GW has currently broken the old 10-girl box into blisters of 3, which makes them notably more costly than, say, the 10 metal IG boxes, which are actually cheaper than 10 plastic Tactical Marines. Don't ask me how GW is calculating these prices.
It's a fun army to run with great visual designs, an interesting background, and some interesting mechanics. Narratively, as an army they sort of bridge the gap between the IG underdogs and Space Marine posterboys, essentially being the best humanity has to offer before you add genetic enhancements. More importantly, you get a great grimdark theme focused on religious fanatism and superstition, crusades and purges, and an emphasis on purity and the power of will. The rarity of SoB as a tabletop army also means that you would likely be a fairly unique and thus interesting opponent to play in your area.
My main criticism to their current rules is that you are almost forced into taking (non- SoB) Special Characters for your HQ as they are too good compared to the normal options, especially the Canoness who unfortunately just sucks without her wargear. The upcoming 6E Digital Codex, however, seems to reintroduce certain equipment we had access to earlier, which might actually make the Canoness a viable choice again.
Ave Imperator, and may His hand guide your dice!

Compare the SOB offers to SM offers. It's a matter of relative offers.
(Also, how many of those SOB offers are recasts?)

Sisters don't ship in boxes direct any more, they only come in blisters.
Ideally, you want
Celestine
2x Sister Superior
4x Sister with Meltagun
2x Battle Sisters (blister of 3)
Immolator
That will get you your minimum force org chart as of the 19th. That won't be a full 500 points though.

its a shame they don't come in boxes and I sold most of my sisters. Brought them ages ago and ran a list heavy with melta dominions and 3 exorcists to great affect.
They are a great short range shooting army. if you enter they optimum range be prepair to take a lot of damage. as a sister player use this to your advantage and try and scare people which causes them to hesitate and not commit to much into that zone.
This means you can pick them apart at ease.

Celestine - 115
2 Sisters with Flamer/Melta - 280
Retributors with 4 Heavy Bolters
That'd work pretty well.
