Hey all

As you may have read in my fortification proxies thread, i intend to have some imperial defence lines to proxy as ADL, i thought, that's not enough, i want to have a crack at some custom ones!

So what advice would you offer for making custom trenches or other fortifications? Preferably with a WW1 feel, nice and delicious grimdark

I have a feeling i'll have to break out the plaster!

No problem. It is my go-to blog for anything like that - I must have reposted it about 20 or 30 times since I first saw it

Next time you're in a coffee shop or fast food joint, check out their stirrers - if wooden & straight grab a bunch. Repeat each visit until you have enough for boarding.
You will save a bundle!

Roundwood is a great resource, but it's a pretty popular theme - you should also be able to find numerous WIP blogs and tutorials right on Dakka, with a little searching. I know I've seen more than a few good ones, over the years.

Also, I agree wholeheartedly with bubber - start stocking up on materials now! You'll go through a ton of whatever you choose to use for duck boards. If coffee stirrers aren't available, you can also slice (poke and pry, really) popsicle sticks/tongue depressors into properly proportioned planks with ease, if the grain runs reasonably straight. If it's too wild, you'd have to resort to sawing, which isn't worth the effort over buying cheap supplies that are ready to go (at Michaels, stateside, you can get perfect planks from a brand called Woodsies - the kids' woodcraft line from Loew-Cornell - 6" planks run you a few bucks for a pack of 75, enough for a few linear feet of trench, if you don't go crazy with them).

I have made a ton of duckboards from balsa, really pleased with the results, but you are right, i did go through a lot
