DKoK, of course.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I like the Tallarn desert theme the best. Its atypical, so that it stands out on the table, and it has a decent amount of fluff to build from. Al Raheim makes for a strong army in general. So that would be my take.

Hold out bait to entice the enemy. Feign disorder, and then crush him.

When I started guard the only plastic models were catachans and I wanted to be different so I went pewter Cadians. Then they came out with plastic ones so now I have the same as everyone else.but after 15,000 pts of Cadians I started my old love, praetorians. Only have one platoon so far but it is a nice change painting red after all the grey and black I painted with the Cadians.

I have 3 squads + HQ of Valhallans fighting alongside 3 squads of catachans in my 750 point army

They really do look pretty funny.

Thats the great thing about guard you can mix them up a bit if you want.

If I`d start guard, it would either be Tallarn Desert Raiders or Valhallans: those two are closest to my WWII/Cold war heart... "Hey lets mix the DAK with the SAS and some Salah ad-Din and grimdark it" Feth yes!
Barring that Valhallans can look really awesome if you paint them up nicely. Besides, Leman Russes with winter cobblestone camo a la this T-34/76?

I might have to do that sometime...

Whereas to an englishman the taking of a sledgehammer to crack a nut is a wrong decision and a sign of mental immaturity, to a russian the opposite is the case. In russian eyes the cracking of nuts is clearly what sledgehammers are for.

Elysian Droptroops. But that has more to do with how I'd want to run a small Ally detachment.

I like to say I have two armies: Necrons, and Imperium.....

A custom regiment, as per what I'm currently doing. I get to be creative and get exactly what I want out of the fluff, while being able to use a lot of third-party bits and models to save money. It is nice to bring something to the table that nobody else has.

If I was really good at painting, had a fair amount of money, and had to stick to established fluff, I'd be tempted to make Drookian Fen Guard with parts from Victoria Miniatures. Tanith would be tempting here, but I'd feel more constrained by having them already well-defined by the novels.

If I had a *lot* of money and were sticking to established fluff, I'd have to run Valhallans. I am very on-board that Soviet Red Army in space feel.

What I like about all of these is that they tell a story about individual, ordinary humans. The Spess Muhreen glorious tales of knights in space is cool and all, but the desperate and relatable story of an ordinary person who has to fight for their life, the lives of everyone around them, and of their home worlds really compels me. Because I care about the individual stories, I tend to like the more ordinary people like Valhallans over the faceless waves like the Death Korp of Krieg or the Armageddon Steel Legion. Plus I love the eastern front WW2 feel, so they win out there. Though I gotta say, if there was a WW2 Imperial Japan in space equivalent, they'd definitely give the Valhallans a run for my money.

They look really good. I've never been interested in plastic Cadians, at all. Until now.

Totally agree with you about Valhallans and eastern front style. They hust have that look that goes with their stuggle for existence. I am hoping the new IG tank destroyer is a su152 lookalike!

Info passed on from a recent managers meeting, GW is looking to make FW easier to access through their stores after they launch the new GW website, and they are looking to change over all of FW resin to something cheaper (don't expect prices to drop) no one knows if its finecast or not.

Even if its false, get what you need, because if its true, well, I don't see it being a good thing.

Rick Priestley said it best:
Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

Well, I've got Valhallans, Cadians, Catachans, and a platoon worth of Steel Legion. With those taken up, my next choice would be Mordians. Those are some sharp dressers. As much as I love Victoria Lamb's sculpts, I'm not going to start another Guard army unless plastic is involved.

I really wish that forgeworld had released an infantry squad for the tallarn - the snipers/heavy weapon teams look great..... but the old metal GW ones don't look so hot.

I purchased some DKoK (2 infantry squads and a command squad) and they look fantastic. They were originally meant to be allies for my grey knights, but I wouldn't mind grabbing some centaurs and building a mechanized list

Currently, the codex does not include different rules for different regiments. However, with all the digital codex add ons, there just might be something different per regiment in the near future. There was once a Catachan codex supplement, but, it is an older addition.

I do run a catachan army, and I would tell you to go with that, however, look for older metal models. The current plastic catachan squad sucks.
