Hello all, I'm going to start making an opposing army for my iron warriors soon. I know absolutely nothing of imperial guard, but was interested to know if it's considered out of the fluff to paint a steel legion army in more of a green milatary colour. Is that acceptable?or heretic. Any advice would be great

Cheers

I would say it works, considering the equatorial region is apparently jungles

Um, actually this is the thing: The steel legion greatcoat is resistant to pretty much all chemicals, including acids. This would include dyes. So, most likely, it''s that color because that's the color the fabric turns after being treated. (see Hammer of the Emperor and Codex: Armageddon)

That an the Steel Legion are almost exclusively Mech Infantry. Catachans were deployed to the Equatorial Jungles (unless that's changes since the Last Chancers took a whack at VonStraub.)

Okay no worries. So uniform change for the steel legion is a bit unheard of then maybe I'll have to go the death korps of krieg then, seeming there is 5 uniform scheme you can follow

You can paint them any colour you like. Just say they were redeployed or they aren't from Armageddon but another similar planet.

Excellent. I've made the mistake before painting a 1200 point space wolves army in white and it just didn't feel right. People couldn't accept it. So army green should be okay then. Better make an order haha

I have Cadian guardsmen and don't have them painted in Cadian colours as they are from a different planet, they just use Cadian pattern armour. That's the good thing about the Guard, they are so vast in number that it is unlikely 2 armies will ever be identical but will have some similarities.

Yeah I agree. Just hate to paint them up in green trench coats and have people saying in not following the fluff etc etc. I've seen a few steel legion photos and they have blue coats..

Make up your own fluff then when someone says you're not following fluff tell them you are and show them your fluff.

During the Armageddon war there were units known as the "Jopall Indentured Squadrons" who looked just like the Steel Legion but had Green Coats and brown boots, looked pretty good.

What? People couldn't accept your army having a color different from the normal? I'm sorry, but that's just stupid. You paint YOUR models any color YOU want. It's you who spend hours painting your little plastic (or in case of the Steel Legion, metal) men.

Yeah man your right. Stuff it hey. Few people had there nose up about it not following the fluff. But yeah, those steel legion models are nearly 10 years old now aren't they?

Minor detail: that's impossible. fluff allows that Cadian units use pretty much every color known, including magenta, due to the absurdly wide number of environments they fight in.

Don't let anyone tell you how to paint your little doodz. Have them rock pink trenchcoats and own it like a boss.

As said by the others, it's your army! But simply saying they come from a different world would give you the opportunity to field a deviating paint scheme and possibly even include other minis, should you feel inclined to do so, without forcing contradictory elements upon other players' perception of the setting, and thus is probably the easiest solution unless you really, really want your troops to come from this one world. In that case, you can still do as you please - lots of novel authors routinely go against minor details in some codices .. remember, there is no canon - as long as you can live with one or two people maybe rolling their eyes (with the Steel Legion this is probably less likely as few people are familiar with their background).

Good luck!

What? I have to say, this looks a lot like toddler jumpsuits.

They don't necessarily need to be Armageddon Steel Legion. Just like all armies using Cadian models aren't from Cadia, you don't need to have them actually be from Armageddon. They can be the 154th Trajan Mechanized Infantry from the 12th planet of the Minty Gargle sector on the border of the Goober Stars. It's a big universe, make it yours.

Cheers boys!! I absolutely have loved this conversation you all have motivated me highly. I'm so far behind in back stories of fluff etc etc. I personally would like to stick to the fluff myself. Ive got a few months of Iron Warriors to paint, build a waste land gaming table then I'll start building my olive-drab spec steel legion. Feel free to help me with a back story haha
