We all have things that anger us about shutdowns, but this from a cousin of mine who worked in child services for 30 years is my pet peeve. In his own words about a shutdown that happened in Maine a while ago:

"I am old enough to remember the McKernon shut down. I was working as a public child welfare caseworker. I was furloughed so I went to the State house the first day. Everyone there was laughing, they all thought it was a great joke. The next day I broke the rules and went to the Maine Youth Center to be sure the children on my caseload who were incarcerated there were O.K. I went to the sex offender treatment cottage to see a boy who had been raped by his father from toddler to young teenager and then he raped his baby sister. I found about 30 adolescent sex offenders all sitting in rows on metal chairs in the middle of the cottage watching a T.V. with one guard supervising them. When I asked the boy why they weren't in their treatment program the boy told me his therapist wasn't 'essential'. I still think the therapist was a hell of a lot more essential than the political clowns in the State House."

Glad the latest shutdown is done, but I wonder what the final fallout is. I just found out from a cousin who is friends with the victims of some of the fallout, so I changed the title of the thread.

It's a bit late to be posting this, but I just heard about it from him and it puts a real face on those affected by shutdowns while congressmen go on vacations.

My wife did her internship at a place like that.

You couldn't imagine half the stuff these kids are there for.

Definitely true. There was a case my cousin handled where the kid's father would hang him from a hook and burn him with cigarrettes. The father would also rape him and rent him out to his friends for sex. The customers included so many prominent men of the town, the state prosecutor told my cousin the judge would just throw the case out, so the attorney elected not to prosecute.
Despite my cousin's protest, the court put the boy back in the care of his father. On a happy note, the father later had an epilectic siezure and died face dpwn in a river, or as my cousin told me, "With his face in the Frog gak".
That job took a toll on my cousins health, but he stayed with it because he felt children like this, which are in greater numbers than most suspect, needed advocates.

That's actually quite common.

For those that might not think the current shutdown has been catastrophic for people, here's another story, with names removed, from another cousin:

"A friend's cousin was violently raped a couple of months ago on Pine Ridge Reservation. She required extensive reconstructive surgery and ended up with a colostomy bag. Really bad. When the government shut down all the funds for the reservations stopped. The tribal cops and wardens were all furloughed. They opened the jails and let everyone out. That man is walking around town while the victim is scared out of her mind. Real story in real time."
