So Apple is announcing something tomorrow ...

... and it is widely believed to be the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2.

Anyone following this?

Following it a bit, as I look forward to the previous model going down in price.

At its Tuesday media event (live stream options here), Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) finally introduced its fifth-generation full-size iPad, which is not called "iPad 5" but rather "iPad Air." The release date for the iPad Air is set for Friday, Nov. 1, and its price will start at $499 and range up to $929.

The design of the 9.7-inch iPad has remained static since the March 2011 release of the iPad 2, but two and a half years and two iPad models later, Apple finally revamped the full-size iPad to better resemble its "mini" counterpart. Apple has chosen to release the iPad Air with the same thickness, thin side bezels and symmetrical speaker grilles as the iPad mini, as well as a similar aluminum unibody and less-tapered back for an easier grip. With this new form factor, the iPad Air is significantly lighter than its predecessors at just 1 pound, which makes it the lightest tablet currently on the market.

The iPad 4 was powered by a dual-core A6X chip with quad-core graphics, but for the release of the iPad Air, Apple implemented its new A7 chip, the same processor that powered the iPhone 5s. Unfortunately, the presence of an A7 chip doesn't mean Apple chose to release Touch ID in the new iPad Air, but it does release with Apple's latest M7 co-processor, which is largely reserved for the upcoming iWatch.

The iPad Air also comes with a new camera: While the iPad 4 featured a 1.2-megapixel FaceTime HD camera with 720p HD video and a 5-megapixel rear-side camera with 1080p HD video, Apple tweaked both cameras, opting to release the iPad Air with the same 5-megapixel camera with larger pixels (like the iPhone 5s) and a slightly improved 1.2-megapixel FaceTime HD camera with 1080p HD video. The iPad Air will also release with faster Wi-Fi and more LTE bands on the cellular model, but both iPad Air models (Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + cellular) will release in two color options: white with silver, and space grey with black.

What do you think of the iPad Air? Are you upset it's not called the iPad 5? Do you plan on purchasing the new iPad when it is released on Nov. 1? Sound off in the comments section below.

eh, i have a mini now ... though i am glad they are now treating the mini as their main ipad (even renaming it to just the iPad) and the Air for those who need a larger screen ...

the main thing i would have hoped for would be for the addition of some sort of flash for the main camera finally ...

i am happy with it ... i had a full sized 2nd gen ipad wifi only that after a while i decided was to bulky to carry around. so i handed it off to my wife and picked up the mini wifi+cell ... screen is still a good size ... battery life seems the same ... but it is a lot more portable ... fits into whatever bag i take with me, and even into some jacket pockets ...

what i always tell people that are looking into one ... if you will leave it at home mostly or just need the biggest possible screen ... go full sized ... if not then get the mini.

I like my mini too for the same reasons. We use our full sized much less now.

Amusingly, Amazon is today advertising the Kindle Fire HDX on the homepage as being "lighter than air".

I have a first gen Nexus 7 and I really dig how light it is BUT I also want a bigger screen. I have avoided Apple products for years but this seems like the product I have been looking for in at least one way. Just two obstacles: accepting iTunes as my personal savior and finding the $500 base cost ...

I actually like that Kindle Fire HDX.

If you're an avid Amazon.com customer, it's rocking good.

But, then again, I've never liked the iPads in general (but, I love my iPhone5)... yes, I'm weird.

You can always go with a Nexus 10, and you don't have to repurchase apps.

Nexus 10 and Ipad size comparison.

Apple hardware is a triumph of engineering, but for me Itunes is a dealbreaker. If you're a part of that ecosystem, though, this must be a very exciting time for you; lots of good kit to buy. I wouldn't hesitate to get one for my mother, for example. Also a good choice for enterprises and their IT staff since the OS is so unified and simple to support, as opposed to, say, the ongoing, embarrassing fiasco that are Blackberry handsets.

I work in the Healthcare IT industry... there's a HUGE market for getting iPhones and iPads into the hands of the clinicians.

But, as a consumer of music/movies/books/TV shows/etc... the Kindle just works for me.
