That's actually kind of what I like to their asthetic myself. It's sci-fi as what sci-fi would of looked like to people in the Edwardian world that the IK tends to draw on.
IK stuff also isn't striclty medeival or "standard" steampunk as-is. There's a good bit of stuff from the World Wars and in-between already in the line, like Trenchers, some of the guns, the Tesla-tech Cygnar and the Soviet-inspired elements of Khador about. The Convergence's 1920s look actually is just drawing on different bits of the historic material than a lot of the rest of the IK does I guess.
The idea that stuff meant to inspire images of the Roaring 20s with lots of clockwork is somehow "too sci-fi" or "cyberpunk" kind of always confused me, really.
And stuff.

The Convergance style is not 20s. It's an idea of what the 4th millemiun [at the nearest] would be at the time.

I meant that the COC models look like what people in the 1920s thought the 30th century would be like.

I think the earliest sci-fi was more some guy tying birds onto a chair [obviously made of handwavium[ and flying to the moon on it.

30th Century seems a bit arbitrary for hyperbolic cases. I have seen stuff that looks like the Convergence models from issues of Popular Mechanics that tried to predict things a few decades in the future from the early 1900s. It's early sci-fi asthetic, sure, but it's simply a take on a historical style still. It's very rooted in the 1920s view of the world, rather than a modern "sci-fi" look that folks accuse it of I feel.
Or in other words, it's a 1920s take on the future, much like hwo a lot of the IK has a fantasy take on the 1920s.
And stuff.

I think that would be squarely in the realm of Fantasy. Sci-fi implies some level of at least quasi-plausible technology.

It counted as sci-fi at the time.

Actually it's a Fantasy take on anywhere between 1800's and 1920's. The design and aesthetics are really in a huge smattering of eras. Cygnar alone can't decide if it's ACW(Kraye), WWI(Trenchers), or somewhere in between.

And I always thought gun mages were very American Revolution-era with the tri-corns and single shot pistols.

I see Warmachine as being more like FF6 with some stuff from the late 19th century.
