Hey dakka, i've got a little bit of a problem...
I've been trying to write up a 1750pts imperial guard mech list, but i can't figure out how best to run it.
My lists are built around 5 or so artillery tanks (manticore, griffin, colossus), CCS in chimera with melta or plasma, and 2-3 vendettas
The question i wish to pose to you my friends, should i take melta vets in chimeras, or infantry platoons in chimeras?
For roughly the same amount of points i could take 4 melta vets or 2 infantry platoons all in chimeras
How do you think i should run it? I'd really like to take as competitive a list as possible, got a big tournament in a few months and I want to do better then i've done in previous years
As always, thanks for any advice i really appreciate it

I run mech/vet IG. I like going with veterans in chimeras. You need troop choices, and at 1750 I would go with either four or five. You can spend alot of points when doing infantry squads and then you only have one troop choice finished.
Here is my list that I run:
CCS: Plasma gun x3/Grenade Launcher
Chimera
Vet Squad 1: plamsa gun x3
chimera
Vet Squad 2: Melta gun x3
Chimera
Vet Squad 3: Melta gun x3
Chimera
Vet squad 4: Melta gun x3
Chimera
Vet squad 5: Harker, sniper rifle x3, Heavy bolter
Storm trooper 1: Plasma pistol, plasma gun x2
Storm trooper 2: Melta gun x2
Vendetta w/ heavy bolters
Scout sentinel w/ auto cannon x3
Manticore rocket launcher
Manticore rocket launcher
A nice 1750. Sometimes I take the heavy bolters off the Vendetta and replace the manticores with two Leman Russ Exterminators w/ las cannon and heavy bolter sponsons. Just depends on the mood I'm in. Automatically Appended Next Post: That list has 5 chimeras, that is alot of shots. I have been running multi laser and hull heavy bolter. The extra shots (even if snap shot) help often enough.
I like Harker in this list. A single squad that can infiltrate and become a nuisance for some people.
Just understand that 40K is more objective based now than ever before. So, more troop choices help.

Thanks for the reply, when you run that list to do you drive at the enemy with the chimeras or let them come to you? do you find that 5 chimeras is enough? because i was in a 1500 pt tournament a while back, and i had a similar list (5 chimeras, 2 manticores) and some games i just didn't seem to have enough tanks

Conscripts, solely conscripts my friend
In all seriousness but, I would go with the vet teams. In the 1500 pt list did you have as many artillery support as you did in this list? Or vendettas?
The meltas firing out of the chimeras and vendettas should be enough for the Anti-Tank, plus depending on how many colossi and griffons you take (especially colossi) I feel as though that should be sufficient to give your opponent a hard knock to his army and soften him up by the time your vets all reach their lines.
Taking infantry platoons you get more bodies, however I think the value of having more special weapons outweighs the value of having more guardsmen, Keeping in mind you'd have to be a bit more conservative with the vets as they can go down pretty easy but with the artillery support you should be able to do that relatively successfully.

I vote for vets over infantry platoons. Sure the platoons have the numbers but lasguns are awful. Vets get you a large amount of special weapons in a pretty darn good transport on the cheap!

For 1500pts I run
CCS
x4 plasma guns
chimera
Vets
x3 plasma
chimera
Vets
x3 plasma
chimera
Vets (in vendetta)
x3 flamers
demolitions
Vets (in vendetta)
x3 plasma guns
Marbo
Vendetta
Vendetta
Leman russ Vanquisher
Pask
lascannon/Plasma cannon sponsons
Leman russ eradicator
Heavy bolter sponsons
1500pts exactly and if I go into higher points I will start by adding more vets squads in chimeras and after that I will add more russes. As the game is strongly based on objectives it is important that you have a good number of troops.

I also choose Vets!
But with a Platoon, there is an interesting option, that I tried once with success: Al'Rahem.
It's always very fun to arrive on the side (or better on the back) of your opponents with 5 or 6 chimera.
But well, it does not work against all lists, so I won't recommend it for tournament.

I think I'm sold on vets, but just fyi, if you take platoons you'd have more scoring units as platoons are cheaper then vets; you can take more

Depends on how you run platoons, yes they give you more guys but they are best off as a gunline right now.

a single platoon as a gunline to protect the Artillery is not a bad thing ..let the CCS and Vets Move Foward and the Platoon to stay put and protect the Artillery.. Automatically Appended Next Post: Otherwise some crafty Xenos are going to trash your artillery quickly..

I want a list that is pure mech, otherwise i would agree that an infantry platoon behind an aegis to protect the artillery is the way to go
