Hey everyone,

I'm currently working on a Grey Knights army list of 1250 points for use against Orks.
Basically I've been losing to this Ork player who hides his troops behind a wall of Killa Kans and Deff Dreads then at his back line he shoots with his SAG which takes out my expensive units.
Also he has a KFF which covers his 'Kan wall' and obviously his troops, which is quite annoying.

So here's my list, I haven't had much experience with 6th ed or Grey Knights for that matter, so any help or advice would be really appreciated.

HQ

Inquisitor Coteaz

Elites

Vindicare Assassin

Troops

Grey Knight Strike Squad(10): Justicar w/Halberd, 2 Hammers, 5 Swords, 2 Psycannons
Rhino

Grey Knight Terminator Squad(5): Justicar w/Halberd, 1 Hammer, 1 Halberd, 2 Swords + 1 Psycannon

Fast Attack

Storm Raven: Hurricane Bolters, TL Multi Melta, TL Lascannons

Heavy Support

Nemesis Dreadknight: Great Sword, Personal Teleporter, Heavy Incinerator

Total 1250 points

Basically I plan to use my DK to shunt and take out his SAG in the backline, while the Vindicare tries to take out the KFF guy so that when the SR arrives it can take out his troops while unloading Coteaz and my terminators into the fray, aided by some divination powers.

The problem is that there's too many Orks and not enough of my forces to be able to take objectives!

I've considered purifiers but against his tactics they would get chewed up by the SAG or the DD and KK's before the Orks even got to them, plus it would be a struggle to get them in 1250 points given the situation.

Hmm, I'm not 100%, but I play with my friend's orks while he plays GN and Draigo seems to have been the clutch player in nearly every game. He seems, to me, to be the best damn HQ in the codex, if not the game, slicing through my nobz like there's no tomorrow.

I agree, he's a very powerful unit, but very expensive for a 1250 point list....

Coteaz is awesome. I agree Draigo is clutch but he is nowhere near useable at this level. I'd do this.
Coteaz-100pts
GKSS(10)-2 psycannons, psybolt ammo, halber on justicar if you like-245pts

GKSS(10)-same as above-245pts
GKSS(5)-1 psycannon 110pts

NDK-PT, HI, GS 260pts
NDK-PT, HI, GS 260pts

Leaves you 30 points to play with and has masses of S5 stormbolter and psycannon fire.

Thanks for the list idea!
I think I should take a SR still though because he will bring air support and I will struggle to take it down...

The Twilight Zone

I like the list idea, and I think every single model choice is good. Change some wargear, but keep the models.

Coteaz is an outright hacker, probably the best named character for the points. Never a bad choice.

The GKSS always need 2 psycannons in full squads. You may also want to consider psybolt ammo to help dakka down hordes and better threaten kans. A S4 stormbolter can't touch a kan, but an S5 shot has the potential to glance. It is costly, but worth it for a full squad. As far as weapon upgrades, a hammer for damage is nice in case you end up in combat with a dread/kan, and want a bit more oomph than krak grenades. One hammer should be sufficient however. The halbred on the justicar is good for the extra I value, but against orks you should always go first, so just save the points. The same goes for all the other halbreds.

The terminators may want 2 hammers as they are free, but again don't need the halbreds. Swords are great to help tank saves against walkers or power klaws.

Ork airpower is low AV, so the lascannon is overkill. The assault cannon provides anti tank as well as horde killing ability. It also meshes well with psybolt ammo, albeit expensive it will make your raven effective against anything an ork army can throw at you.

Dreadknight is fine, but you can drop the sword to save points. If you think the re rolls are worth it, nothing wrong with keeping it.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

Thanks!
I've redone the army list the way you said, I feel like I have a much better chance at winning now!

This list looks much better. At smaller pt levels, you need numbers. However, I'd consider transports for your GKSS. The great sword is not a must have.

I'd probably tweak this a little bit, dropping the great swords off the dreadknights (probably not necessary at this points level), and adding hammers into the strike squads to deal with kans and dreads.

something like

Coteaz - 100

strikes x 10 2 psycannon, psybolt, hammer for justicar (just refuse challenges) - 250
strikes x 10 as above - 250

dreadknight - teleporter, incinerator - 235
dreadknight - as above -235

this leaves you at 1070, so maybe add another smaller strike squad, or possibly a small unit of purifiers with halbards to take it to 1250 points.

I'd agree that the GS isn't a must have but it will more than make back it's points if you get the DK into combat. On the charge you'll only have 5 attacks and 4 in subsequent rounds of assault. That reroll to hit AND to wound has saved my DK's countless times. I've tried the use of transports and I have mixed feelings about them. Razorbacks with psybolt heavy bolters are pretty good but I'm still not sold on rhinos for GK. If your opponent is bringing air power at 1250 it will either be so minute that it can be ignored, dealt with by a quad gun ADL, or he's invested too many points in it which could cripple his body count.

The only problem is that even with air support he still has a high model count compared to mine.

I can't remember his list that well but we played 1200 points last time and it was something like

HQ with KFF hiding in 20 boys

Guy with SAG hiding in a squad of 10 Gretchin

2 Deffdreads

3 Killa Kans

3 Bikers

12 Orks in a Trukk

1 Dakka Jet

I can't remember the upgrades but man those power klaws are annoying.

All of those things, aside from the dakka jet, will whither to prescienced and psybolted storm bolters and psycannons. I don't play orks but isn't the KFF a cover save? Your dreadknights can flame and charge the boys, challenge the HQ's/leaders and tie up those units fairly easily. Even the kans still have to come to you. Wait for him to come inside your 24" kill zone. As for the jet I'd just ignore it. Bringing a SR is just silly to counter a dakka jet. It's just too many points. Terminators should be avoided altogether I'm this list as their fire output is terrible when compared to strike squads of similar cost.

Another hq idea, since you aren't running henchmen, is an OM inquisitor with TDA, a psycannon and prescience. It's 110 points and you get a relentless psycannon with a 2+\5++ that can twin link a squad. It's a friggin bargain.
