Going for a marble look. First time ever attempted and I asked a friend who came round what he thought... he was totally baffled by it and didn't know what it was. When I said marble he said...
"Oh yeah, I see what you mean now... looks nothing like it... kind of you know... tried but erm... failed."
His exact words :(
What do you think? It was done with inks so it can be painted over if needed I used this as inspiration
And this was the result
Wasting my time or?

Looks good to me. What may help is to put some cracks / chips in it. and sharpen up the edge highlights.

Good color choices, hard to tell about the actual execution with the photo provided. The detail does look a little soft in comparison to your sample pic, though.

Personally, I like it. It looks good, but I would say that I think this would be better for basing, or doing terrain work.

I think you just need to put some hard veins/lines through it and then you would be golden.
What you have is an absolutely great start.

Looks awesome to me, just like a countertop in a friends house, maybe your friend is thinking of a different kind of marble, I think there are different kinds?

If you want a good and easy tutorial on marble check out Nerdfest in the blog sections. His marble looks great and in a few steps.
On yours though, your friend is a bit dim. Your effort looks rather good imo

I would say the overall look is good - but it doesn't say marble to me. Maybe some other sort of stone like a polished limestone - or honestly, when I first saw it...a wood burl.
The veining is what most people think of when they think marble (even though a lot of marble is relatively clear). The veins tend to run in one direction due to the process of their formation - something which can be hard to see on small sections like tile, but it becomes more apparent when you look at larger quarried slabs.
You will notice the veining quite clearly in the first image, and even the second one - the direction is pretty easy to pick up on. With your technique - there really isn't a discernible direction in the pattern.
There are a lot of different techniques and methods that you can use to create something which is recognizable as marble - but one of the easiest has been used for decades to paint "doll house" marble countertops:
http://miniatures.about.com/od/paintedfinishes/ss/Paint-Technique-For-A-Faux-Marble-Finish-In-Miniature.htm
It is easy and fast - if a little messy. Tape off areas you don't want to marbleize, and everything is over and done with in a matter of minutes.
