I recently participated in a tournament where the prize support was trophies in the form of models assembled, sprayed gold and put on black primed plaques. I would have preferred to just receive the nib model instead. Now I have a model that I have to strip if I want to use or I can just leave it to collect dust somewhere. I understand both sides. I think trophies can be cool to hang on the wall or set somewhere. I much prefer product of whatever I'm playing or store credit. Even if it is a kit for an army I don't play I can always trade it or convert it or cannibalise it for parts. How do you feel about it?

why not "Both" Option. The two are not mutually exclusive..
If I remember, the BAO gave those out at the doubles, and credit aswell.

Obviously both is the best option. The whole point of this survey is for when both isn't an option for whatever reason.

Where's the option for $50k checks?

I think you'll find the overwhelming choice to be the latter option.
Trophies are nice and all, but a WH40K model turned into a trophy is incredibly useless.

Other games give out cash prizes like that, so it would be nice to see GW start sponsoring similar events. I really don't know why 40k tournaments are always played for such tiny prizes.

No option for a shake of the hand, a pat on the back and a hardy three cheers for all followed by tall storys, cocktails and cigars?

If that's not how to end a tournament I don't think I want is!

Seriously though models or vouchers or an item of significance (tankard, diorama etc) - throphies are usually just gold painted plastic pap.

It was hard...
But in the end I went for trophies. But if there was an option for both I'd go for that.

I know kits will be much more popular, and as much as I'd love more kits, I think having a trophy to symbolize my win is much cooler.

No I'd put cash in the gift cert (can be used to buy models) category.

I'm a big fan of instore credit. Sure trophies are nice (If they are actually trophies), but I would like to expand my forces too. Especially if I payed good money to play.

Because they are such tiny events....Even the larges 40k Events are what 256 players. IF we assumed that all of that money went to prize support it would only be $12,800. But then throw in renting out the space...paying for tables....making terrain...etc. and it starts to eat into that prize pool....

If you look at MTG worlds for instance you are looking at 500+ players that all needed to qualify at other events etc. Sponsored by a Company that makes tons more money etc.

I would infinitely like better some kinda gift card or cash. since its similar to option b il vote that one.

Nothing worse then getting a bunch of old banshies when you exclusively have a space marine army. or something like that

well I'd be more open to trophies if they were actual trophies, not just primed gold models.....

but yeah, I dont get NIB stuff too often so winning something like that is way more valuable to me (that way a fig painted the way I want can collect dust on the shelf and not a gold one!)

While I prefer awards, I totally understand why stores like to give product as prizes. If you run a tourney for 16 people with 10$ entry fee and the top prize is 100$ of store credit, then running that event guarantees 100$ of sales for the day.

Other techniques like 'door prizes' which can give smaller credit can also drive sales.

I have seen amazing trophies, but I have also seen not so great ones. In General, I think people enjoy product.

the FLGS i use to go to before moveing sort of did both. The winners could get gift certificates to the store to use towards buying a new GW kit. (Or the modles for the respective game). Their would be a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize.

Then their was a tropy that stayed in the store, that the 1st place winner would get to write their name on.

Last place got to sign the "Wooden spoon" and got their entry fee back as a gift card towords new units.

Since the tournments were on a monthly biases so they always tried to keep the prizes from getting to big, to stop from things getting to "cut throat".

As somebody who will never win a tourny, I would like a trophy to show off if I did somehow manage it.

Models I can buy. Trophies can be bought but that makes you look a bit weird.

I just said trophies because winning stuff I'll forget that I won a box of figures, a trophy is bragging rights.

Although winning stuff is always great! A trophy collets dust, and you can tell the story of the trophy only so many times before it gets old...

I don't mind trophies as long as it is something you can be proud to hang on a wall or display on a shelf. When I think of trophies for events I run I usually go to display swords or weapons. I just think if you're not going to make it a quality trophy I'd rather get models or store credit.
